UPDATE NOW THAT THE FIBRE IS INSTALLED
Thanks all, I think I understand as much as I can before the Open Reach chap comes. It is much cleared than it was now. I will update this thread after it is in and up and running. It makes it easier when we are not technically minded, if we understand it to a certain degree beforehand.
Many thanks0 -
I'm sure that if you ply the Openreach guy with sufficient tea/coffee/chocolate biscuits, he will help with any questions you may have!

UPDATE, FIBRE NOW INSTALLED.
The Open Reach engineer came today. This apointment has been delayed several times due to me not being available on the dates that Talk Talk had slots for the engineer to come. Today was the day so.... The engineer came exactly on time. It took 3 and a half hours in total to do the work. I did feel sorry for the guy as it was very foggy and wet outside. He had to go up the pole opposite our house and renewed a cable coming across to the house. He did all the inside work first. He installed a box in the under the stairs cupboard where the old BT box has always been, the new wi fi box went in the same place the old one had been although it is quite a bit bigger and so the phone and other paraphernalia on the shelf won't all fit there now. The BT big button DECT base phone plugs into the back of the router. Digital Voice has no difference in tone or sound that I can see. He drilled through the outside wall of the house to bring a cable in and fitted a box to the outside wall. It was coming dark by this time and he must have been frozen working out there today. I did try to ply him with tea and scones but he refused my offer. He was a man of very few words so I didn't expect him to be amenable to sorting out my TV but how wrong I was. He offered to set up the smart TV with the new wi fi code and made sure that it was working. I tried to give him a token amount as a thank you for a job well done and the extra mile that I felt he had gone to help me. He said, no, we are not allowed to take tips so we both thanked him very much. After he had gone I realised the burglar alarm wasn't working. I didn't think that this was linked to our wi fi but it must be. I tried to do a reset of the box but not knowing why it wouldn't work I rang the alarm company at just before 5pm. They were again more than helpful at that time of day. The boss asked me for the new router code and password then he went into the settings remotely and sorted it all out from his office in about 20 minutes. He said there was a firmware update showing as available too so he may as well do that while he was into the system. How good was he?Everything now seems to be working as it should. I think the laptop and i pad seem to be running faster than they did but the proof of that will be when my son is on line at the same time as I am and the TV is also on, that will put it through it's paces.I was dreading being left to sort the tv out but the engineer offered to do it and I was able to put the new passwords into the computers myself.I am paying the same monthly direct debit as I have been paying Talk Talk for the copper line. I know they have it written in that they can put up the charge every year in April so that will be one for negotiation.Hope this helps anyone else thinking about an up grade but feeling a bit apprehensive. These smart tv's and phones are all well and good but for us oldies they are way smarter than we are. Thanks to all on here who offered their help and advice, it was very much appreciated.1 -

Hello I can truthfully say that I haven't noticed any difference whatsoever when using the telephone. It sounds the same, rings the same, my original phones were the dual, big button BT phones with the larger than average numbers. They work just fine. The main one is downstairs and is connected into the back of the new internet hub and the other one is into the socket in my bedroom. I needed 3 plug sockets for the new system and only have one inside an under stairs cupboard where the new line was brought in from outside, so I bought a triple gang socket prior to the engineer arriving and he set it all up for me, he even asked if I wanted him to set up my smart tv for me, which he did. I was told before I agreed to go ahed that in the case of a power cut then the VOIP phone line won't work so you do need a mobile to use on these rare occasions. That hasn't happened as yet and hopefully it won't.
It did take the best part of 4 hours for the work to be completed and it was a foul wet and windy day so I felt very sorry for the engineer having to work outside in the awful conditions. He had to bring a new line across from the telegraph pole on the other side of the road, not sure exactly why except that it was a very old copper wire I think so needed renewal. The internet is now so much quicker than my old system was and my son and I can both use it without any drop outs which we frequently experienced before this was beyond frustrating.
Hope this helps with your decision.1
