wherever it is (down the back of the sofa, hidden in with some clothes in a drawer?) it sounds like it is nicely cosy so hasn't switched the heating on yet or the battery may have failed (although in my system if the battery in the remote fails to communicate the system defaults to on, my mother's was the same).

Does the position of this little switch on the timer make a difference? It is on the boiler itself. I’ve tried it at the clock symbol, middle and top, but still nothing.

Yes - if the timer isn't 'on', then the boiler won't fire.
So push that switch up to the top 'I' = 'on', and then press the CH1 button once. Does it light up? Wait a bit - does the boiler fire?
  • Thanks all.

Some progress. For now I am not looking to put it on time, just turn it on.

I have flipped the switch to the top, pressed the CH1 button on the receiver and woohoo! A red light on the receiver, a green light against the radiator symbol on the boiler, firing up noises…..…..and then it all goes off again after a minute or so. :-( Tried several times.

The hot water is working fine.

Is the boiler still trying to talk to the phantom thermostat, or is it likely to be a bigger issue with the boiler? I can call someone out, but money is tight so exploring all options first.

We could get another thermostat, but am still looking at smart options and was hoping to go another couple of months before doing that. So if we can get it to work manually in the meantime it would be good.

Have searched all drawers, cupboards, shelves again today. Still haven’t found it :-(

It will be somewhere very logical and obvious!  Have you looked on top of the boiler itself?  Or in the meter cabinet?
  • Yup. We’ve found the wall bracket we removed when we decorated too. We all remember seeing it in the summer heatwaves, as we commented it had reached the dizzy heights of 21 degrees, which never happens with the heating. But then someone tidied up…

If "someone" was using it simply as a thermometer, is there somewhere more interesting that they might have wanted to check the temperature of?  Like a greenhouse or attic room?
  • Hi,
lost things are usually found in the last place you look, but then, of course that'll be the last place you look.

This is a combi. The DHW is working fine. So the pump, gas valve, combustion chamber and pretty much everything is also working fine. That might leave a sticking diverter valve, which has been in DHW mode for donkey's, and may be reluctant to move?
Can you explain further - you press CH1, a red light comes on ABOVE IT? And, is this usually red and not another colour when the controls are working normally?
And the boiler responds, but then goes off again after a minute or so? Is the red receiver light still on?

The receiver shouldn't be looking for the 'stat, or, it shouldn't make any difference even if it is. I mean, if the 'stat's batteries went flat, then the receiver wouldn't be able to find it, but pressing the override button should still work.
Do you know the CH 'flow' pipe under your boiler? It'll be one of the two 22mm copper pipes, often at the ends. Does it become warm in that working minute?

Something to try - make sure some rad valves are open(!), turn on the CH as before (CH1), turn the CH temp up on the boiler just to make sure it's 'calling', and then turn on the hot tap full for 5 seconds. Off for 10. On for 5. Off for 10. One more on. See if that shakes the diverter valve loose. When you finally turn off the hot tap, does the boiler keep going?
What does the display temp say during these tests?

I haven’t really ever checked the receiver before, but a Google tells me it should flash green when pairing the thermostat and red when there is a demand for heating.

Nope, the receiver light goes off. And won’t turn back on again, the button won’t respond.  Unless I turn the boiler/receiver power off and on again, which seems to reset it, but the light won’t stay on more than a couple of minutes at most.

Yes, the flow pipe warms as well as the closest radiator flow pipes. I have opened TRVs fully and set boiler temp to max heating. And topped up the pressure a little.

Thanks, I tried this. Heating fired for a couple of minutes then went off again.

    Thanks Bendy, answers above.

Idle temp display is approx 22 degrees usually. When heating ran for a couple of minutes, it climbed to 43. Then rapidly dropped back down.
