Sounds like this is the standing charge, to cover the cost of the supply and pipes, not for any usage.0

Hi,so why get the gas deal?0

@sirhc21 Can you go back in time please
Had you already got a gas service to your property or did one have to be put in ? Who paid ?
Have you completed a formal application form for the gas boiler and (I presume) radiators ? was this 100% funded ?

Ask to be put on a deemed tariff. With some suppliers on a deemed tariff if you don’t use any gas you don’t pay the standing charge. I’m assuming the bill is for the standing charge and not the installation0

Once you have agreed, even if you are not using it, it is too late...

I know what a deemed tariff is. I also know that it is usually the same price as the SVT and some suppliers will change you onto it in circumstances such as this where there is no chance of any gas being used. Deemed/standard, it’s just a nameMWT said:Mobtr said:Ask to be put on a deemed tariff. With some suppliers on a deemed tariff if you don’t use any gas you don’t pay the standing charge. Once you have agreed, even if you are not using it, it is too late...It is a legal definition, not 'just a name', it describes the state of your contractual obligation to the supplier, and if you have not contracted with the supplier it does allow you to avoid paying the standing charge.Where you have contracted with the supplier to have the supply/meter installed, you are way past 'deemed'.If the supplier is prepared to cancel the contract then that is a different matter, but I'd be surprised if they would do that when the supply was explicitly requested to be installed. Can't hurt to ask, and failing that asking to have the meter removed may be the only alternative if there is no change of actually getting the boiler installed. ... just check the cost of the removal first...

By the sound of this it is just to cover the cost of uncapping a previous supply pipe as running pipes to a new property is a lot more than any £120..TimSynths said:Sounds like this is the standing charge, to cover the cost of the supply and pipes, not for any usage.
A total new gas supply from the mains pipe is probably getting on for £1000 as the pipework has to be installed underground..a big expensive job..The pipes must have been in place and this charge will cover fitting the new meter then standing charges from that time and continuing until the meter is removed . It may be painful but prob the best thing is to pay it off in installments if you can t afford it..or better still buy a central heating system .it's much better than economy 7 night storage0
