Energy saving obstructed?

I joined the Energy Support and Advice group on Facebook and some of the questions on there are absolutely ridiculous. So many people don't have the faintest idea how any of it works.Xbigman said:This sort of campaign was always likely to get a poor reception on this forum but in reality there are a lot of people who have never even thought about saving energy for whom this kind of information might have been useful. The number of people I've spoken to who can't even understand an electric bill is frightening.

Maybe spending a little time on a forum such as this or Citizens Advice would help people along a little if their able to tear themselves away from social media and other such places that the majority of them get their "facts" from nowadays.
The amount of apparently sensible people that can barely tell you what their tariff is or what the applicable rates are,for example concerns me greatly, but what can you do when that's the sort of thing your up against?.
Only interest from many was the pound signs that appeared when the £400 handout was announced, which resulted in complaining that the money wasn't handed to them immediately to do with what they liked with.

I disagree. People who are not interested need things rammed in their face, like putting it on the TV in a prominent ad slot. Given the billions being wasted on allowing people to keep using energy, 15 million being spent on trying to reduce usage is peanuts and would be one of the few things the government would have done that I agreed with.[Deleted User] said:
These people are not suddenly going become interested because the government runs an advert. And no advert is going to be able to explain to them things that they are not interested in.Xbigman said:This sort of campaign was always likely to get a poor reception on this forum but in reality there are a lot of people who have never even thought about saving energy for whom this kind of information might have been useful. If they were interested, they would already know.
Actually surprisingly sensible for HMG to decide not to spend money on something that would have been useless PR guff.

Several European countries, including Germany, France, Belgium, Holland, Italy, Ireland and Switzerland, are running public information campaigns. I assume they all think that it will lead to reduced energy usage, as would any campaign run here.
LIz Truss is reportedly against it, not because she doesn't think it will work, but because she is ideologically opposed to telling people how to behave.9 -
To be honest, I don't what tariff I'm on, or what I'll be paying this month. But that is because Eon.Next haven't pulled their finger out and sent an email or updated my account.rp1974 said: The amount of apparently sensible people that can barely tell you what their tariff is or what the applicable rates are,for example concerns me greatly, but what can you do when that's the sort of thing you're up against?.
Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

It's as if running a "use less" campaign would in some way admit we might have a problem!!
"Why cut back if we've got plenty". 🤔😉How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)4 -

That's unfortunate,I've known since 21/09 what tariff I'm on,what rates I'm paying all from the email sent on that date.FreeBear said:

Straightforward update from Next Flex old rates to Next Flex new rates, was initially incorrect rates showing in my account albeit with a massive banner explaining that although the rates were incorrectly displayed that they would be billed properly, this has transpired to be correct.
Obviously hasn't worked that way for you though so have at them.

LIz Truss is reportedly against it, not because she doesn't think it will work, but because she is ideologically opposed to telling people how to behave.More likely, because she's been telling everyone that there's no shortage of energy and there's nothing to worry about. So a campaign telling everyone how to cut their energy usage risks making the public think she's lying. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.4 -
Very careful wording there!Ectophile said:double_dutchy said:Several European countries, including Germany, France, Belgium, Holland, Italy, Ireland and Switzerland, are running public information campaigns.
