I just checked my octopus account and it shows I have used around £100 for September in electricity, but they have reduced what they take on dd, so I now owe £66 , they haven't taken the money off what I owe.? Is that how it works? So this month I will use more , they will take £ 47 or whatever again and I'll owe another £66 odd, so them I'll owe £130 , and this will keep increasing
So although they are taking less out of my bank, I'll still owe them hundreds. Is that right? Was that how it was supposed to work? I thought they were reducing what we owe not just reducing what we pay?

Eon Next - they are showing no change to my monthly payments so I am paying the same each month that I was last month (just come off a fix and now my payment is 3 times higher as is unit prices) and no indication of government discount being applied. I will give another 2 months to see if it sorts out.

You WILL receive  £400 over the next 6 months, its as simple as that.

The way Octopus arrange that will depend on you payment method, look at the relevant information on the website.

@Auti check your supplier's website, they may refund the government support directly to your bank account rather than crediting your energy account.

Octopus has been slow off the blocks. The EBSS guidance is as follows:

5.32 For all Direct Debit customers, the date the EBSS payment is provided should be in line with the customer’s established Direct Debit collection schedule.

No one is reducing what you owe. For a typical Ofgem consumer, the cost of energy has almost doubled since this time last year.

The way to look at it is as follows. You need to calculate what your total energy bill will be for the next 12 months based on your annual usage in kWh. If, say, this gives you a total cost of £3000 then you should add/deduct any debit/credit balance from this sum. Let’s assume that you have a credit balance of £600 today so your revised total cost for the next 12 months is £2400 or £200 per month. The cost might change if your actual usage is different from that assumed in the calculation.

Based on the above, your supplier should charge you £200 - £67/66 (or £133) from October through to March. £200 will still be credited to your account. From April, the payment taken from your Bank will revert to £200 a month.

No, you just have to wait a little longer for the £66/67 from the Government to be added to your account cancelling out that shortfall.

They reduced my fixed rate DD by £66, then before they managed to take the DD I changed tariff to the SVT which then made the DD actually more than it was previously as it no longer had the £66 discount. As long as what goes into the account is more than what I pay then I don't mind however.

Getting any straight answers out of Octopus at the moment is like 'pulling hen's teeth'. They really should not expect people to monitor Twitter when a simple information email to those affected would suffice.

I have gently pointed out to them that Octopus is in breach of the Direct Debit rules by not informing me in advance that it was changing my monthly DD payment: I found out by a look at the App - PAYMENT HOLIDAY.

Any organisation that wants to collect payment by direct debit will need to sign up for the Direct Debit Guarantee.

This is essentially a vetting process carried out by the banking industry that ensures that any company using direct debits complies with a set of rules, including:

    • Informing you at least ten working days before any changes to the amount, frequency or date of your direct debit are made

This actually says that "If there are any changes to the amount, date or frequency of your Direct Debit the organisation will notify you (normally 10 working days) in advance of your account being debited or as otherwise agreed.

    So
me Companies have introduced their own rules reducing the notice period - don't know about Octopus however,

With Octopus it is at least 5 days as per the T&C, the notification email is sent before each DD payment is processed and shows the amount due to be taken.and the date it will be processed.
I can imagine in the current circumstances there may be a little cross-over for some if the DD was reduced after the email was sent for very early October DD payments.
