I asked Nationwide and they said money needs to have been taken from your account.
Just to be 100% clear ... taken from which account though?
The account you're switching from & therefore closing.
Or the Nationwide account you're switching to?

Ah the joys of talking to bankers and advice/experience online ...... everyone says something or has an experience that goes against the next person.

Bottom line - there's one sure fire way to be sure but do you have the time?
If not, you take your chances & find out whether you're lucky or not.

Indeed. I can only go by previous personal experience of transferring active DDs from donor accounts, which had been set up but had never paid out, where they were accepted as active in every case, because the payment instruction existed and was live at the point of transfer into the new accounts. They have been accepted on each of several occasions I have done this, although I realise that any individual bank I have had no experience with may take a different stance.

In Nationwide's case though, I think it quite clear from the T&Cs on their website, despite what individual customer service bods may say in contradiction of one another:

"You must transfer a minimum of 2 active Direct Debits..."

and further down, whilst not part of the T&Cs, but appearing below them under the heading "Useful Information":

"A Direct Debit is active where a valid regular Direct Debit instruction exists on the account".

No mention of it having to have previously been paid on the account being transferred in, or elsewhere, or that it must be a monthly, quarterly, annual or any other instruction. Only that it must exist as a valid instruction to make a payment or payments.

I have a screenshot of that page for future reference, just in case they might attempt to suggest that I haven't complied with conditions that they haven't mentioned  ;)

One thing is certain: If they've paid out, then they're active.
  • A direct debit mandate is active as soon as it shows up on your account.

I have done switches on a number of a occasions where the direct debits haven't been collected on the donor account beforehand and still received the bonus, and that includes one with Nationwide.

If you need it then you can take a look below
    OnepoundDD (on particularl dates)
    Plum
    Moneybox
Sprive (you would need mortgage for this one and I have a referral)
Do you know if taking money both weekly and monthly count as two direct debits on Moneybox?
