It would be fun trying to do up the backnuts on any outlets - One hell of a spanner would be needed
Indeed - but not that hard to do by taping a spanner to a pole. Not sure if a standard water butt tap would withstand six feet of pressure though!

This thread inspired me to have a look at water butts/compost bins, and I checked out the council and the water board. It seems that both organisations use the same company for fulfillment.

Water butts (complete kit) are £34.95 inc postage from Yorkshire Water and £29.95 + £5 postage (same price) from Bradford Council.

330 Litre Compost Bins are £6 inc postage from Yorkshire Water and £14.95 plus £5 postage from Bradford Council.

So it seems that the water board may be a cheaper option, although note that in this case the council's delivery charge is per order, so if you wanted more than one water butt it would work out cheaper, but for some reason compost bins are a lot cheaper from the water board!

For maximum greenness I'd say the larger the better.

But then again, I like big butts and I cannot lie.

Your logic is impeccable ;) with its cage it will be roughly, 1.05 x 1.2 x 1.2, but they presumably vary depending on manufacturer so can also be 1.02 x 1.02 x 1.2

Hi Wig, Did you ever get your 200 Litre drums from Dairy Farmers of Cardiff ?

Sort of related - has anyone ordered one of the special offer water butts via Severn Trent, which comes from a company called Blackwall, and actually received it?

I ordered in March, they took a month to acknowledge then cashed the cheque at the beginning of April. We're now most of the way through May and still no butt! :( (I've emailed them to find out where it is).

Bit miffed because it's nice and rainy at the moment and it's all going to waste.....

Apparantly Blackwall have a shortage and are currently quoting 6-8 weeks for fulfillment.

Unless they made it clear that there would be a delay when you ordered, they are legally obliged to deliver within 28 days or you can get your money back.

Ours took longer than 28 days but they wrote to us explaining the delay and explained that we had the option to cancel and get our money back if we wanted to. We didn't.

Apparently there was 'unprecedented demand' because of all the different local authorities and water boards offering discounts. At one stage they had the rest of the kit but couldn't supply lids because they came from somewhere else.

We don't have anywhere to connect a waterbutt at the moment, so I am considering making a mini butt with a couple of 20l containers I can get free from work. I'm thinking putting a funnel in the opening to help get more rainwater in it. Mad idea? Any suggestions? If I get enough water to clean my car a couple of times over the summer I'll be happy. :D
