I was once bit on the wrist by a terrier when I was younger, it wouldn't let go, so I punched it in the nose and it did! Apparently if you punch a dog, it learns your the boss. Never tried it myself as I don't own a dog but it's just something I heard.

Wonderful comment there, just what every loving dog owner needed to know..

As sad as it is to have any animal put to sleep I totally agree with your decision. Yes maybe you were too soft on the dog and maybe training may of helped in some way, who knows.
The fact is the dog was dangerous and could of seriously maimed someone so I don't think you had any option in the circumstances.
Rehoming the animal in my opinion would of been cruel as I'm sure virtually no one would want to rehome an animal with this temprement. Also rehoming this dog to a family without children would also be pointless. Who wants a dog that is going to tear the house to pieces and could bite a person especially a small child if he got out.

Yeah, great idea. Why don't you come round to my house and bite my wrist so i can see if it works? LOL

shame it didn't bite your bloody throat. If you punch it, it learns your the boss.............I thought I'd heard it all!!!!!!!!! All it learns is that it is scared of humans.

I'd like to see her punch my Rottweiler to show it who's boss. PMSL

All that actually does is teach the dog that it can't trust you to be fair & a dog that doesn't trust you is 10 times more likely to bite.

pebbleblue, as a dog trainer and dog lover, I would just like to say that you did the right thing. I hope you are feeling better about it now. You could not rehome a dog like that and good on you for doing the right thing and not trying to pass the problem on. I am not sure many rescue homes would want to take in a dog that bites and those that do have usually taken the dog as the owners have lied and said that it hasn't bitten. Then the rescue home have to put the dog to sleep, which is hardly fair for the dog as it has had its life disrupted by being put in the kennels and then has to be put to sleep anyway, and all because the owner couldn't do the responsible thing.

The rescue kennels only have limited spaces. When an owner lies about their aggressive dog just to pass their problem dog on to the kennels, as they haven't got the guts to do the right thing by their dog, this has probably meant that a nice natured dog has had to be put to sleep through no fault of its own, because the rescue kennels didn't have any spaces for it.

The Dangerous Dog Act covers ALL dogs. I believe one of the first to get charged under that act was the owner of a Pekingese.

If you are thinking about getting another dog sometime pebbleblue, why not go to Discover Dogs and look at all the different breeds there and talk to the owners of those breeds? Cavalier King Charles spaniels seem to be nice natured little family dogs.

Terriers are not always the easiest of pet dogs and because they look cute and are little, they can tend to rule the roost given half a chance. I have lost count of the number of people who contacted me about their little dog that they love very much (usually Jack Russell Terriers and Westies) that are biting them. Some of them have so many bite marks on their arms, they look like tattoos!

I hope you had a good Christmas. You did the right thing for your children and the fairest thing for your dog in the end.
RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

Just wanted to say, thx again for all the replies, I'm feeling a lot better now, and as sad as it was/is I know now I made the right choice. Rehoming him or sending him to a shelter wasn't really an option, even the vet said they wouldnt take him (because he had bitten on more than one occassion) and as someone pointed out thats just passing the problem on to someone else. Also aggression aside, we did love him lots, and i couldnt stand the thought of him being left in kennels or passed around.

[SIZE=+1]Dear Lord, please open your gates
    and call St. Francis
to come escort this beloved companion
    across the Rainbow Bridge.

Assign her to a place of honor,
for she has been a faithful servant
and has always done her best to please me.

Bless the hands that send her to you,
for they are doing so in love and compassion,
freeing her from pain and suffering.

Grant me the strength not to dwell on my loss.
Help me remember the details of her life
with the love she has shown me.
And grant me the courage to honor her
by sharing those memories with others.

Let her remember me as well
and let her know that I will always love her.
And when it's my time to pass over into your paradise,
please allow her to accompany those
    who will bring me home.

    Thank you, Lord,
for the gift of her companionship
and for the time we've had together.

    And thank you, Lord,
    for granting me the strength
to give her to you now.

    Amen.

Someone else might've been able to successfully moderate his behaviour. And I think he would've preferred to be "passed around" than killed. I sure would.
