I'll take out the smart meter and give them the readings...
If you take out the smart meter you will have no readings to give! I suspect you're referring to the the in home display, that looks something like this?

This isn't what sends data to your supplier and removing it won't make any difference.
  • Whatever you do, do not "rip out the smart meter", as this is illegal and tampering with meters is not the best way to go about this. If you wish to unplug the In Home Display unit that's fine, i don't have mine plugged in too, but don't start ripping out meters whatever you do, please!

GIven them actual readings once a month, even if it is the same reading as last month, this way you should get acurate bills. Do this via the online account, where it will say something like 'give us a meter reading'  make sure the serial number of the meter matches that on your bill.

but the op should also understand that wont mean their dd will be 0 (or even just the standing charge) as the supplier sets the rate based on estimated usage over the year.

our heating is currently off and we use very little for hot water so several months there's no change tot he reading... but we WILL use something like 5000 kwh between october and February... so our monthly dd payments are based on gas use of about 400 every month so the payment can stay the same all year.

the other options (as people have said) is going to variable DD. but you have to understand that might mean low payments over the summer and cripplingly high/unafordable ones over winter.

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?
