We have a hole in the wall in the lounge. Where they had all the wiring for a wall mounted TV. We don't have a wall mounted TV so the hole is just there. We will get around to fixing it at some point. But it isn't something you can ask the previous owners to do.

Snap! Indeed, the family we bought from also had a wall-mounted TV in the kitchen and the main bedroom. Luckily, we have loads of pictures/paintings so just hung some of them strategically to cover the holes  :)

OP, I'm with @pinkteapot (at least until you get around to any serious decorating).
  • This hole is in the corner of the main bedroom. They had a chest of draws in that corner so I'm not sure what the reason for the hole is 🤔 There was no TV in there.

Given the size and shape it could have been for a temporary toilet. Any handyman can fix that quickly and cheaply. Several ways to do it. I like the method of gluing on cross sticks then tracing the hole onto some plasterboard or board and glue that in. Or screw it in if you need later access. Quick skim and your done. Nothing to be contacting the estate agent or seller about. Just that and the tap issue to fix is a great result on moving in. It honestly is.

I agree with Lorian. I’d guess there was a soil pipe running through there with a 32/40mm waste pipe above it so likely a toilet and sink at some point.

It’s an easy fix though. Cut the hole square and then cut out a piece of plasterboard ever so slightly smaller. Glue some scraps on the inside so they overlap and once dry glue your main piece of plasterboard to those. Use filler to fill in the join and sand smooth.

I’d have been annoyed with that too as it’s a fair big hole but can be fixed.  I don’t think it’s something that the EA would be interested in to be honest now youve completed.  From a personal point of view I wouldn’t have left a hole behind like that for someone to find but then not everyone has good intentions!
    Enjoy your new home
  • Jeez, what size of cable would require a hole that big!

Its not going to be for a cable, more likely a pipe of some sort which has since been removed.

Same advice as above really, its a used house so you really should expect some maintenance tasks. You can argue all day long about why the hole is there or whether the owner should have fixed it but its redundant as you have completed now and its your responsibility.

As others have said, now is a great time to learn some DIY skills as they are invaluable when you own your own home for small tasks like this.

Spray foam could be an option but if the size of the cavity is fairly large, you could be pumping a lot in and there are electrical wires there (albeit likely going down towards the socket) so personally I would cut a couple of small bits of wood and fit them behind the cavity against the wall using grab adhesive, then get some filler and fill the hole. Make sure you fill as flush as you can to prevent needing to sand down loads of filler. I would fill once just below flush, wait for it to dry then go over again to get it flush. It will never look perfect but it should look 95% ok.

If it were cable related then it is not for a cable, but to gain access to a cable. (or to what looks like a possible void)
  • It's your house now.  One of the joys of being a homeowner.

    Easily fixable.
