So reported fraud to Experian and they’ll remove searches in 7 days but looks like HSBC added CIFAS marker despite me asking not to… just need to contact other CRAs now too..
weird guys have been back again and loitered in the hallway near post boxes for some time, so building manager is going to check CCTV. Somehow feel loads better now, despite the treatment I received from HSBC - they have FOS escalation coming…
You can't ask them not to put a CIFAS marker on there...  And you really should consider getting a CIFAS protective registration asap.  Yes, having those markers will mean someone has to look at any application made in your name (rather than the application being approved or declined automatically) but that's surely easier than having further fraudulent accounts opened, and having to deal with those?

Bottom line is that the 'somebody' could have been anyone, including even yourself. It's most unlikely that HSBC will ever establish the true ID of the fraudster, but they will obviously have information that you, and people on this forum, don't have. Such as the precise time of application, and the IP address used. HSBC will also know precisely what data was used to confirm 'your' ID. You'd have a huge job proving HSBC failed in any way, and you might just be better advised to let go, as the fraud was discovered before any harm was done, and you have a lot of other things to deal with.
Plus, unlike a phishing scam where the perpetrator is usually from a foreign country, the OP believes her perpetrator is local. Even if HSBC were to look at the IP address geolocation, it would have shown that the application was made local to the account holder.

Several people have said it now, which you've ignored, but I'll join the bandwagon nontheless:

I think you're being incredibly unfair on HSBC and your emotions are causing you to scapegoat them when the real person you should focus your anger at is the fraudster. Why do people naturally do this? It happens all the time on these forums. Easier to blame the person you know than the person you don't?

You keep mentioning a penalty CIFAS marker, and I've really no idea why - neither HSBC or anyone on these forums have said anything that would lead you to conclude you may get a penalty CIFAS marker. A protective CIFAS marker was suggested, which makes no difference to a mortgage.

It looks like you are getting incredibly carried away with this all.

Presumably they added a victim of impersonation marker which is an accurate reflection on events. This is a protective marker, it will not effect your mortgage. You can not just tell the bank what they can and can't report - they are likely obligated to report this.

They likely want to check for the letters and cards etc they are expecting from the banks.  Possibly there are a few people in your building going through the same scenario.
