Current account fraud

  • Just had a hard search for now but if they don’t act quickly, I am worried that it will appear as branch told me that it was opened. I was advised not to take out any new lending before mortgage completion, so if they don’t act quickly, it could have a much bigger impact.
  • Oh and I have been accepted for mortgage and exchanged contracts but lender can do another check before completion in November.

Not meaning to cause further worry, but something that crossed my mind is all the required information would have been collected during your mortgage application as well.

Also what information did the estate agents collect when they did their due diligence to confirm you were viable buyers?

*yes I'm probably a bit paranoid

It normally takes a couple of months before a new account will start being reported to the CRAs. New accounts opened online have a cooling off period and if cancelled within that don't leave a mark on your credit file other than the search, so when an account is opened fraudulently and this is detected, there should be no trace left. Branch staff are probably not going to be very knowledgeable about these aspects, they will not be responsible for investigating this issue, and probably shouldn't have told you what they did. Their comments have clearly caused unnecessary worry and upset.
  • Great thanks for your help! Ahhh we actually had a weird email from mortgage broker a while ago notifying us of data breach, so it might as well be them. It’s also a relief that it takes a while for current accounts to show

    Please stop fretting.

One hard search for a current account will make no difference whatsoever to your mortgage application.
  • Wow, this gets weirder..so we noticed weird guys pulling outside our flats, running in to the hallway and then running out quickly. They did it again a few mins later, so my other half went to check & they ran off.. we got their number plates but don’t want to accuse them just in case. How scary, just as I managed to relax a little!

    No wonder you're moving !!
  • Yeah, not great to be checking post box multiple times a day/looking out for dodgy cars outside the building… 😬
  • So reported fraud to Experian and they’ll remove searches in 7 days but looks like HSBC added CIFAS marker despite me asking not to… just need to contact other CRAs now too..
weird guys have been back again and loitered in the hallway near post boxes for some time, so building manager is going to check CCTV. Somehow feel loads better now, despite the treatment I received from HSBC - they have FOS escalation coming…
