There are thousands of cases like this. Where properties have been converted to flats many only have one supply and are sub metered.
And all those properties have enjoyed fractional standing charges for all this time.
It's a bit like the marshmallow experiment: would you rather save £150 every year, or be given £400 this year?

Cross posted with my edit but not sure what is going on.

So I would be seeking confirmation from the LL about the billing method including Siding Charges and ensuring any revised charges/subsidies are also documented.
Right now I wouldn't be doing anything at all as there is no detail on any of these changes, so going to have to wait until there is more clarity, and generally watch for any information about support for people who do not have an energy account in their name and see if this sub-metering arrangement is covered or not...

What will come next will come next but if the OP doesn't understand the current method of payment including how charges are passed on, (information on allowable charges can be recovered From the CAB:) then what hope have they of understanding any changes to the liability?

    I did try to ask:
    • What is the standing charge?
    • Where is it advised and described?
    • What is your share?
But I don't think that situation has been confirmed by the OP.

If, as others have mentioned the standing charge is wholly covered by the LL, then the OP may have to cover only those changes due to the unit costs. Or they could work out the impact upon the overall bill of any reductions/rebates and then ensure the reduced rate is applied pro rata for their consumption.

Either way, understanding how it currently works may indicate the LL's preferred methodology and is worthy of investigating.
  • Hi,
the OP hasn't moved in yet, so who knows what the landlord might do, my reading is that the OP reckons to be entitled to the £400, but alas not, as does not have an account with a supplier.
The landlord might be decent and go 50/50, or share on a percentage basis of total bill.
The OP could ask landlord what will be the arrangement regarding the £400, and if not happy abort the tenancy, still has time to find another property and sign up with a supplier to qualify in own right, but will need to be quick.

I'm not sure of the standing charge, because when asked about the arrangement, the LL said they will cover the standing charge.
Because we have a separate meter, we will take our meter readings at the end of the month, and calculate using the current unit cost of electricity how much we owe, and pay the amount to them.

Edit: they are with bulb so I see the standing charge is 49.64p per day.

  • "For those in park homes and who pay landlords directly, I'm told they should benefit from the new business help (awaiting details)."

From Martin Lewis's round up, where for the first time, I see someone mention people who pay landlords directly, which sounds more hopeful? Will still have to wait and see.
The problem is just a logistical one. I'm sure a lot of people are having to assess their finances and if they rolled out the £400 grant the following year, then it would be a larger amount to miss out on.

Over time never paying a standing charge will amount to much more than getting a share of a one off rebate of £400.

I'd be happier to get the forever discount unless you only plan to live there for a short time. Even if you only stay a year you might be kicking up a fuss for £20 or so.

The property only has electricity, so there wouldn't be a standing charge for gas anyhow. I'm not kicking up a fuss with the landlord, and don't feel entitled to their £400 discount, I just believe for people in my position, the £400 should still be accessible if I'm in a separate dwelling.

I imagine me and my partner will stay for a year, but I do have a deposit to get onto the property ladder, but this was an opportunity to live in the countryside instead of the city which we wanted to try.

Just going to have to wait for the details of the separate fund that has been mentioned and see if you qualify.

  • Just bumping this topic instead of reposting.

Starting to see help/grant will be available to tenants who pay an 'all inclusive' rate to landlords. That still doesn't quite cover my situation, where the electricity comes from the landlord with my property being sub-metered. Although I'm paying the landlord for energy, it is the specific amount I'm using, so it's not 'all inclusive'.

I have attempted to research how to apply for energy grants in my position, but have been unsuccessful. Is anyone aware of how to access grants or contact relevant authorities to gain help in this situation?
