    Sorry people, I do feel a bit emotional about the situation.
    I do think a lot of you would think differently if it had happened to them.

    It's like when your best friend gets cheated on by their wife/husband, you give him all kinds of advice.
    But a week later, it is you who has been cheated on...
    to save quoting your first post.
    for future reference.
    you could screenshot your barcode on your phone in advance.so no internet issues at the tills.

    OP just take responsibility for your own actions.

    blaming or not taking responsibility   for something that you have full control over should not be the done thing.

    Also Why not say in the initial e-mail/letter to Waitrose you blame them for your smashed screen and also it was due to moving till and the fact the terminal froze?

    That seems to be the point of your complaint.

    (i often find these situations  are not directly divulged because deep down people know they are chancing there arm)

    Thank You for all your replies!

    Reading all your comments, I think I should have been more clear to Waitrose what I wanted from them.

    @tripled I didn't give feedback, but I wrote a complaint.

    I don't think many people who do have English as a first language would think twice about the use of the term 'feedback' instead of 'complaint'.  As has been suggested, many of the replies are based on pro-forma letters and teminology used somewhat loosely.  They could have used 'communication', 'e-mail' etc and it would have the same broad meaning.
    As for the cracked screen, nobody is liable for that damage apart from the OP.  Not what they want to hear but that's the reality.
