Thank you Macman.Interesting to know that 4g may be still around but I'm fed up with renewing gadgets. It's difficult round here and the number of shops closed in the local towns doesn't make it easier.I've had a quick look again and online but with so much other paperwork/renewal/changes flooded in I'm at the end of my rope and hanging on.
I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

You don't need to go to a shop, I haven't bought a mobile in a physical shop for more than a decade.
You'll pay far more in a shop than online.
4G is not going away for years. No free lunch, and no free laptop2 -
I don't even use the internet on my phone, it's just for calls and texts. But yes I prefer to buy locally at least so I can review them and handle them. For instance the second I bought for the radio and music to carry round the house. It has a plastic back that comes off easily so wouldn't want that again.I'm much better with what I can see and easy to return if there's a problem. But I appreciate your reassuarance.

Then just buy a cheap feature phone, plenty from £15 upwards. But make sure it has 4G. Something like:

Though I'm wondering why you bought an S2 way back and never used it as a smartphone, because it was one of the earliest ones to run Android. No free lunch, and no free laptop1 -

However, I wouldn't recommend having 2G phone anyway. I'd grab a VoLTE enabled 4G phone as this will get the best coverage EE currently offers.1 -
They have already set a soft target date of 2026-2029, just yet to make it official. They are aiming for the shorter time frame if they can.1

Maybe, but it is also in the public domain, just not firm date yet.0
