You need to check your bills to see that the meter number they have recorded down on the bill is the same as on your smart meter. If it still has the old meter number you are just delaying sorting it out until later on.

Yes when I opened the account after a transfer last year to Eon Next (from Bulb), I had an initial problem with Eon Next in that the MSN Meter Serial Number did not match the smart meter MSN that I had (it was the old meter).  It was sorted quickly enough with minimal impact or inconvenience to myself.  So to the OP. please check all the MSN details on each of your bills that you have had with Eon Next (they will all be in visible and downloadable in' My Messages' and/or 'View Statements' sections of your account).  Possibly they have not transferred your new MSN details correctly and have left the old closing read as the new opening read - hence the large -tive amount in your favour when the meter reads have been pulled directly and have both deemed on your account as 'Smart'.

To be absolutely sure can you post what the reads were (the opening plus both manual and smart subsequent reads from when you moved in) and double check what your statements are saying re the MSN.  At some point there will be a bill with reads from both old and new.

Thanks, I will check this later when I’m home.
  • Yes, this sounds like a Missing MEX to me. This is when a new meter is installed, but the system and the national database etc has not been updated, so it still has the old MSN (Meter Serial Number). This does happen and is normally picked up when a meter reader calls round, when a customer asks for a refund, when the customer moves out / moves supplier etc.

I would sort it our sooner rather than later. If you tried to sort it out in a few years time the account will need re-billing back to when it was installed and this is when things get confusing

Also go and look in the cupboard and see what tags/labels are in there.

If is says installed Nov 21, opening reading 00000, then you'll know something is definitely off.
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

Usually there should also be a label with the reading of the meter that has been removed.
