Eon - Account in more credit than we’ve paid
Hi guys,
just looking for some insight as to how this has happened and whether we need to do anything about it, if anyone can help.
the situation is: my partner and I bought our first home in October 2021, we signed up for Eon on monthly DD (I think we were just on standard variable to begin with,) we were paying £85 per month for gas and electric (more than we were using but I was happy to be paying more as obviously prices were about to rise so being in credit was welcome.)
in March we changed tariff to a 12 month fix on the April price cap - meaning that when prices rise again in October we will still be on the April cap. At this point Eon put our DD up to £89 per month.
We have a smart meter so I like to keep an eye on our usage - we usually use around £60 per month, so should be in a decent credit.
however, I checked our account last week and it says we are £1,900 in credit!!

As previously mentioned, we moved in in October, and have been paying £85-89 per month, so we’ve probably paid less than £1000 altogether. Neither of us have had energy bills in our names before this property either, so I feel like their must be an error here or I’m not understanding how it works properly.
Has anyone had a situation like this before? And should I flag this to eon or do anything about it?
Thanks for any help :-)

If you log in to your online account, you should be able to see all the payments and credits made to the account.
Anything you don't recognise should show up.How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.56% of current retirement "pot" (as at end January 2025)0 -

Anything you don't recognise should show up.Thanks, I had a look at my statement and £1,737 went into my account under ‘Gas’ on the 13th of July.I’ve checked my bank statements and I made no payments to eon on that date, my DD is normally on the 1st of each month and was as normal on 1st July and 1st August.
does anyone have any idea where this money came from or why it was credited to my account? What should I do about it? Lol0 -
How strange!
Do you have an anonymous benefactor 😉
I think all you can do is ask?
However, I doubt you'll be allowed to keep it, if it's an error.

You say you have smart meters but are Eon actually managing to get the readings? Have you received bills that show actual readings and not estimates?Barnsley, South Yorkshire

Perhaps someone made a manual payment to their account but accidentally put down your account number instead. At some point they will realise and try to recall the payment.2

Have they been producing bills based on those readings too?
Do you have the actual bill noting the random large credit being applied? How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.56% of current retirement "pot" (as at end January 2025)0 -
Have Eon had any competitions to win "a year's energy costs"??
How could a random other customer make a one off payment to your account? Don't you have to be logged in?
I think it's probably an internal error. How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.56% of current retirement "pot" (as at end January 2025)0 -
UPDATE: I found the actual bill with the charge on as suggested.
it is basically saying that when we moved in and took a manual reading in October, this was a lot higher than when we got a smart meter and it took the first reading from that in November, so they refunded us for the difference.I remember taking the reading and we didn’t submit a number we sent them a picture of the meter, so we didn’t lie about the reading, but obviously we haven’t unused that energy so I assume we shouldn’t have received that credit?0
