I thought I was quite clued up on energy bills and such, but apparently not 😅0

Did they actually replace the meter for a smart one in the November. IE start at zero.
I'm not quite following the timeline?
You gave an opening reading of a "dumb" meter on moving in, in October, and then the new meter gave a smart reading (and has done ever since)
What was the closing reading on the old meter? How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)0 -
This would still not explain how you can get more money back than you paid.
Only explanation would be that whoever was in the property before you overpaid and you are getting their money back.3 -
We moved in in mid October and manually gave an opening meter reading - 17242As soon as we moved in we applied for a free smart meter and they came and fitted one at the end of November, this took a reading and has done ever since, but the first reading it took was 13323 according to this statement, so it is saying that between Oct-Nov we used -3919 units.I wasn’t home when they fitted the smart meter my partner was so I’m not entirely sure what the process was there.0

If Eon are happy it's all good, I wouldn't worry too much. Maybe stick a bit in a savings account when you can, just in case they realise it's not quite right in the next few months.Barnsley, South Yorkshire

When Eon fitted our smart meter, it started from zero, with a closing reading taken from the old meter before it was removed.
Sounds most unusual to have a "new" meter fitted with a "balance" on it.
At the end of the day, you're not "entitled" to a credit against energy you never overpaid for in the first place.
Up to you if you flag it, or keep quiet. How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)0 -

thanks for all the help!1 -
You need to check your bills to see that the meter number they have recorded down on the bill is the same as on your smart meter. If it still has the old meter number you are just delaying sorting it out until later on.

Just set the money aside and don't spend it already.1
