Dealer finds a fault after buying my car.
Hi everyone, I have a question about my liability after selling my car to a dealer and them finding a costly fault I was unaware of at the time of the sale.
I sold my car via one of these websites that gives dealers the chance to bid to buy your car. The winning dealer sent someone to inspect the car and negotiate a final price based on an in-person viewing.
They inspected the car and we agreed a price, payment was made and the car was signed over to the dealership and taken away on a trailer.
The day after they contacted me telling me the car has a very expensive issue that needs to be fixed. The fault didn't effect the driving of the car at all and I was totally unaware of it. They haven't explained what remedy they may expect from me yet.
On the assumption this isn't some kind of scam, am I liable at all? They inspected the car to their own satisfaction and paid me, and the car is no longer registered to me and no longer in my possession. Did I "misrepresent the car" by saying it was fine when I believed that was the case?
Unfortunately I didn't write "Sold as seen" or similar when confirming the sale, I'm not sure if that is an issue.

“caveat emptor”Did they take the optional 12 month warranty?You have not said what the fault is but did they have a clause in the documentation that stated deal was subject to workshop inspection?1

Usually there is no comeback availabke to the Dealer. They are deemed to be the expert, and if they haven’t spotted something then it’s their tough luck for not inspecting properly,3

I won't go into the details of the fault because that would possibly identify me to the dealer as searching/asking this, and it has me rather stressed as is.
No, the inspection was to be done in my driveway by their agent/inspector/collector. He was running late and didn't even take it for a test drive, which seemed weird to me. He checked the shutlines, the alloys and brakes, and sat briefly in the car and started the engine. I'm not sure he even opened the bonnet, but he may have done that while I was fetching the documents from inside my home.

As long as the vehicle was roadworthy, and you did not misrepresent it's condition, then it's tough. You do not have to disclose any faults, it's up to the dealer to ask.
So tell them to fix away, at their expense, as it's their vehicle. It's just weird that they would send such a message without saying what they expected from you.
'Sold as seen' is not relevant or required.No free lunch, and no free laptop2 -
More than likely a scam, its a very common method, the mystery serious issue that we can fix cheaper than you so happy to keep the car if you reduce it by £1K, only need one in 3 suckers a month and that's a nice earner.
two options.
1. Ignore.
2. Sorry you inspected the car, I was unaware of any issues and the car was sold in good faith.3 -
The problem is that it is the dealer getting stuffed for a change and they don't like it.I am sure that we all have sympathy for them - Not1
