A quick google of (Removed by Forum Team) shows 2 people of that name in Bournemouth - which has an area code of 01202.

    (Removed by Forum Team)

On that side of Bournemouth there's a large office complex for JPMorgan.

Whether any of that is legit I don't know.   But I doubt it as there's been previous reports of this on MSE

Maybe if you (or actually your son needs to do it) tell the bank about this they will be more willing to co-operate about the fraud.

Many have PayPal linked to bank accounts with a DD mandate, but such arrangements are still subject to the Direct Debit Guarantee, so if, for example, PayPal pulled £502 out of his bank account without notification that they'd do so, then this may support a DD guarantee claim via the bank, i.e. the fact that there's a DD mandate doesn't in itself allow the bank to point the finger at PayPal.

    https://www.directdebit.co.uk/direct-debit-explained/incorrect-payments/

Once the Direct Debit has been set up you should receive advance notice confirming when the payments will be collected and how much they will be – it is advisable to check this to confirm the details are correct.

If a Direct Debit payment has been collected which is not as outlined in the advance notice. I.e. more has been collected than the amount specified or the payment has been taken on the wrong date you are entitled to an immediate refund of the amount collected from your bank or building society under the Direct Debit Guarantee.

Basics: has your son now cancelled the DD so that no more money can be taken?
Then, he needs to contact the bank and ask them for proof of the authority they received to set up the DD.

JPMC re Paypal is not a scam or fraud payment, it is the standard DD for Paypal to pay for items through your bank account. I have one on my bank account and is what pays my Paypal purchases.

Following from jimjames, I copied and pasted this from my bank account DD list.
    "JPMC RE PAYPAL INTL LTD"
No screenshot etc., for obvious reasons!

If they check their PayPal account it will say what this is for... As it will be listed in purchases.

OP says that there is nothing showing on the son's PayPal account:

Do the sirt code and account number on the bank DD match those of Paypal - just because it is labelled Paypal doesn't mean it actually is paypal

My point was that there is a person with the name the OP had who lives in Bournemouth.  And Bournemouth is an 01202 phone number.  And JPMC = JPMorgan (Chase) has a large office in Bournemouth.

And additionally the scam goes back prior to Chase having personal bank accounts in the UK as far as I'm aware.  So scam.
