I'm looking at getting a Smart meter ASP. But octopus wait times are 6 months!
I've had pv panels installed so looking at maybe changing suppliers to get a smart meter sooner.
But after switching energy providers how long did it take yours for a smet 2 to be installed?

It might depend what area you are in. The meters I had were here when I bought the house 3 years ago, electric smart meter and non-smart gas meter.
Octopus asked me if there was a reason I didn't want a smart gas meter, there wasn't.
2 weeks later, the guy came and fitted a smart gas meter. The reason I'm replying to you, is that he brought in an electric meter as well, thinking he was changing both for some reason. Needless to say, he didn't fit the electric meter.0 -
There are two suppliers who might take on new customers, and only if you call them and get lucky.
One of them is Octopus, the other is EDF. Not much choice here for changing supplier.0 -
I'm with Sainsbury's Energy (EON Next).
I emailed them asking for one and within 20 minutes we'd exchanged account details and they offered me an appointment for a couple of days ahead. I choose one some weeks later instead.
Was very shocked at the speed of response to emails and how quickly it was all sorted.0 -
British Gas fitted mine within 3 weeks in December.0

Interesting, I've been on the list for 4 weeks with octopus and not heard back. I suspose if I leave them. I run the risk of not being allowed to return to them. I'm sure from what I've read seg can now only be paid with a smart meter0

Higher demand and a shortage of chips for smart meters is at the root of the problem. Octopus has said it has managed to get hold of enough meters to meet its roll out target but it has been challenging.1

I moved to Octopus in April and they could only get readings from my electric SMET2 meter, not the gas. Both were only fitted in Dec 2019.
I rang them late May to ask if anything could be done and on 8th June I had both meters changed. This is in South Yorkshire area.Barnsley, South Yorkshire

I assume you know it's not the energy company that fits the meters, so even if you were able to move to another company, it's quite possible/probable you would still have the same wait as it would no doubt be the same company fitting it for your area.
You could always chase Octopus again.0 -
Think it's a postcode lottery situation.Barnsley, South Yorkshire
