Hi I've had lots of mixed reviews regarding getting a smart meter installed for gas, any recommendations on here shall I get a smart meter or traditional meter?

Get a smart meter. you will hear more noise from people with issues than those that have no issues because who reviews a meter that is working fine?

Smart meters are still meters. you can still manually read them from the menu on the meter like you can a traditional meter. But with costs going the way they are, why on earth would you want to submit a reading and get a bill later to find out what you have used when you can have a countertop device that updates in real time for elec and half hourly for gas with what you have actually used and spent?

Presumably this is for a new gas supply, in which case you won’t get a choice.

If it is a new meter or year meter needs to be swapped you have no choice, you will get a smart meter.

personally I've never seen the point of having a little monitor taking up space on the kitchen (or any other) counter.  The gas is on for a reason or it's not on.  Maybe there's a point to having one for electric as you can think about what you tend to leave on all the time (microwave has a clock running, tv on standby) but that is minimal compare to leaving allll the lights on in a house.  Other things are on because they are being used so again - why fuss with a monitor.

As for smart meters in general - saves you having to submit readings which is nice given how many of us have our meter in a cupboard behind the hoover and all the other cleaning supplies or similar.

There are lots of people against lots of things, but the key is not to have a spread of opinion for the sake of opinion, but to assess the facts (rather than the scare stories and conspiracy theories) and make your own decision.

Can't get a smart gas meter fitted unless you already have a leccy smart meter as far as I'm aware.

There are numerous people, some on this forum, who are against them for a variety of reasons, ranging from (unproven) health concerns to the (unused) ability to contol your utility supply remotely. If ever the utility market opens up again, there will doubtless be more tariffs available to people with smart meters because they will be based on Time-of-Use, particularly for electricity. I don't even know if you can have a smart gas meter without a smart electric one, as the gas meter usually commmunicates with a hub on the electric meter, which than transmits data to a central hub, which the supplier can access.
The In-House Display (IHD) that smart meters come with is an interesting toy at first, but usually ends up in a drawer somewhere - it has nothing to do with the meter's ability to send readings or receive tariff information.

I'm happy with mine. Saved me cash - I didn't realise a fan heater costs 60p an hour full on! I choose to keep warm in more economical ways now.
Now a gainfully employed bassist again - WooHoo!
