I'd possibly report it if there was a ban & they'd truly left it running as described, if not I'd just mind my own business.
Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.

    There's no ban here.. Yet
But it is not very nice is it?

So basically they aren’t breaking any rules you just don’t think it is ‘nice’. I think you would look very foolish to report something because you are jealous of their sprinkler or just don’t think it is nice. There are still sprinklers being used in some council green areas where I live, hoses are being used to water public areas there is no ban in place so they aren’t breaking any rules. A neighbour hired a large rigid pool and filled that up, again breaking no rules.

Meanwhile a relative of mine lives in an area that has had a massive water leak, their local area was actually flooded to more than an inch deep due to issues with pipes that the water company cannot afford to repair. I think that is much more of an issue than being jealous of your neighbours.

I went for a walk this morning and noted that the local sports stadium and local primary school both had sprinklers operating across their amenity grass areas.  These are both going to be on metered water but that does not seem to deter the desire for green grass.  Potentially, both could also gain some "doing the right thing" points by not watering the grass.
I'm not saying it's the case for these two, but some places have their own bore holes so that they're not affected by either metering or hose pipe/sprinkler bans. As you say it's not "doing the right thing".
My mother moans about this - generally golf courses near her - as their water extraction depletes the aquifer that everyone's water comes from.

You may think it's not nice but they are not breaking any rules.

If your area announces a hosepipe ban and they continue to use theirs, I'd have a word with them (given your new information regarding their ages) before reporting them to the water company as you asked in your first post.

Why don't you just ask them?

    Maybe it's their age - late 80s.

  • Water meters should be compulsory.
This would stop people doing this
