I don't see why you couldn't contact your local hospice, or maybe the Occupational Therapy dept at the local hospital could make use of some?

hi - I contacted Battersea and got a lovely email back, and they're sending me out patterns to knit blankets for dogs - what I can't understand is why they go through so many, I'm sure their website it was something like 1000 a day?!

Thanks also to all the posts about the animal charities, I've just emailed K9 tonight asking for a pattern. And please have a look at their website, what a fantastic charity, and some fantastic pictures of dogs in jumpers!

Oh, I'm so glad my spare time can be used productively now, thanks so much for the replies!

My mum knits baby hats and donates them to the local hospice shop who sell them for £2.50 each. They don't take too long to knit, about 1 per day and aren't too taxing for her as she is getting on a bit.

Gerio, any chance of you being able to get the patterns your mum works from? My mother would be interested in doing something like that, I'm concentrating on the dogs for now, but when i told my mum about this the other day, she said she's be interested in doing something similar.

I would imagine that some dogs chew (and destroy) them, plus they must need to wash them very regularly, so need spares for that, plus I would imagine they would send each dog they re-home away with a blanket for familiarity?

but you're right, it was 1000 a day, and it's only medium to large ones they want!

  • This site might be useful to anyone who wants very basic online knitting patterns for blankets/ baby hats / bed socks etc!! The pink pull on hat for babies (near bottom of hand knit list) is so cute & looks to be easy knit then purl.

I knit for a charity in Scotland http://www.bonniebabies.co.uk/ they send tiny items
of clothing to hospitals all over the U.K. for premature babies and also, sadly, burial items when needed. At the moment we are in the middle of a challenge for the month
of February to make 800 vent bonnets and 800 cardigans. It is a lovely group to be a member of and help the tiny babies and their parents.:T

This is my first post I hope its OK:j

  • There is a pretty comprehensive list of charities asking for knitted items here:

    http://www.eparenting.co.uk/knitfest/charityknitting.shtml

The hats needed by Save the Children are quick and simple (although the campaign ends 21st October so get in quickly!), and Feed the Children put blankets at the top of their knitted wish list, which would be good for anyone with a basic skill level.
