Knitting for Charity
I met a lady this afternoon who said that she knitted for charity - it was a very brief meeting and I didn't get a chance to ask her for further info, so I thought I'd ask here! Basically she said that she knitted vests (I think it was vests anyway) for children in Romania and they were collected and sent off twice a year. Anyway, I'm on my own a lot and knit to relax, but I'm an extremely basic knitter and there's only so many scarves and cushions a person can knit and I wondered if anyone knew of any charities such as the one she mentioned that I could perhaps knit for? I enjoy knitting, but as I say I'm very basic, but I wondered if I could put my time to use in knitting something other than cushions that would benefit a charity. Does anyone know of such a charity?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.

I'm sure I read somewhere on MSE about a charity that knitted shawls etc for premature and stillborn babies. I know it made me cry and it seems like a very worthwhile gift if you can do it. I think there were patterns. Perhaps someone else can link us into it?:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0

You mentioned making scarves. There is a group that gives scarves to orphans each year. I believe they only take scarves in the Fall, but if you want to plan ahead, you might want to check them out.

There is another site that knits teddy bears for children in Africa who hae lost parents to AIDS, but you may have to use a pattern purchased from them. I would also be on the lookout for groups looking for warm fuzzies for folks in the areas hit really hard by winter storms, and many shelters etc. can use hats and such this time of year. Good luck.0 -

Don't forget the animals !
you don't have be great at knitting or crochet to make little blankets for the P.D.S.A. (or perhaps a local animal rescue centre)
I also think this is good for people who used to be excellent knitters and now struggle a bit because of problems like arthritis in their hands.
It's nice for them to know they can still enjoy their hobby and at the same time give a sick or abandoned animal a cuddly blanket

I searched the board as I know we've talked about this before, and this is the result.
Happy knitting!

My grandma use to own a haberdashery shop. She had tonnes of wool. When she closed the shop, she donated it all to charities.
A few years later, she joins a knitting club. She finds out that the wool they are still using is the stuff she donated. She had so much of it.. lol
sorry, can't remember the charity name. I think it was a Jewish charity that sent the clothes to poor Jewish families in Eastern Europe.0 -

The dogs at Battersea Dogs home would love you to knit them a blanket (they get through 1,000 blankets a day!!).
Click the link and email them for a pattern. Happy knitting.

Molly, thank you so much - that is exactly the type of thing I was looking for, I think baby stuff would be too small and fiddly for me, I adore animals and do voluntary work for animal charities, so this is perfect for me - thanks again!0
