British Gas messing up Bills

Hi,

this is my first post here. I was wondering if anyone could help me. On Friday 8th July at around 10pm I received an electronic Gas and Electric bill from British Gas. The bill said I owed them £1224 and it needed to be paid by 4th August. This is the first time I have ever been contacted about been in debt but it has apparently been building up for over a year. I phoned in Monday 11th and was told that my bill had been reduced to £835. On Tuesday they sent me another bill saying I now owed £1449 because I had given them up to date meter readings on Monday. Phoned again was told my account was now with British Gas Evolve. Spoke to them and was told they couldn’t do anything because my balance hadn’t been transferred over yet but British Gas said they couldn’t help me because they didn’t have access to my account info. Left it a couple of days and phoned again. This time I was told my account balance was £0 then it £490 due to some refunds. Then I get another electronic bill saying in £109 in CREDIT. So I’m really confused am I now in credit? Is I have received a bill that says I’m in credit but it turns out to be wrong can I refuse to pay the outstanding bill because they have messed it up? Does anyone know what British Gas have done why did I never hear anything about been in debt they never even put my direct debt up. All my bills say you are on track to cover your energy costs at the top. I’ve tried phoning but nobody seems to want to help me. Thank you sorry for the long post.

Have you your own records of meter readings as well as the one you have just given them.

Go back over your last BG bills and find some with actual (ie our read, your, read , A) rather than estimated E.  Let us know what they are together with tariff detail - p'kWh and s/c   plus and DD's paid
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • Everything is showing as estimated so I don’t have any actual readings. My partner would never let them in to read the meter. There was a meter reading in July 2021 that showed they had underestimated by 4000 units of electricity and then a reading the other day. Also I don’t have paper bills only online and now I can’t download my old bills to compare. I’ve taken over the bills from my partner because he’s  useless so I’m in a mess. I just don’t understand how we’ve gone from a large debit to credit. The person I spoke to in the phone said she had never seen an estimated bill be so far out the 4000 unit one.

  • Hi,
estimated bills don't help, and worse of all you don't have a start reading.

    35175 meter reading July 2021

36667 electric reading as of Friday 8th

Did you receive a bill using the 35175 real July 2021?

What direct debit have you been paying monthly? Have you submitted meter readings for October 2021 (30/9/21) and April 2022  (31/3/22) price increases?
  • No we have been paying £39.91 a month since then. British Gas never informed us that the bill was this high. We only saw the bill from last July last week we never received this they never said anything at all.

The catchup bill last July would have been about £880  for the 4400KWh.

The £39.61 should have covered your usage and standing charge for the 12 months more or less.
Can you post the bills from last July and this July after removing name and meter number and anything else that can identify you? There should also be a bill for January 2022.

  • I only have a bill from July this year no
bill from January it wasn’t online only last July which I now can’t access and the many bills from this July. I can’t access the bills that say I owe £1224 and £1445 only the one that now says I’m in credit. This is the thing they have never sent us anything I’ve checked and my partner hasn’t ignored them we never had anything at all until this bill the other week. they never contacted us the direct debt came out every month it never went up it just appeared out of the blue. I only have the readings because I wrote them down.
