Hindsight is a great thing but perhaps you should have bought an angle grinder and gone DIY on them?
Seriously though, you should have insisted on them getting you a convertible at the first possible opportunity. The airport office may not have had one but it should not have been impossible for them to intercept your route from another office and do a car swap. We've done that twice in the USA.0
