I have no plans to move with the times.  I use my phone as a phone, and for texting.  I use my camera for photography.  I used my bank cards where I must and cash where I can.  Putting all functions in a single place seems a high risk strategy to me.

Your phone has NFC so just download Google Pay and follow the instructions. Even an old fogie like me can do it.
Another old fogie here, is it get linked to one of your credit cards, similar to PayPal?

Yes, it does. Effectively it creates a digital version of the chosen CC on the phone. But you must have NFC.
PS: why is the OP having to use a PIN no: no contactless card?

    Eh? ☔

The OP asked about moving to mobile payments because:

I am forever fumbling about trying to get the right card out of my purse and then remember the right PIN number.

But if they used a contactless card instead, the PIN issue part of the problem goes away

Fair point, but the OP needs to authorise  contactless first , then work out which bank/banks they want to use with mobile. OH and if your purchase is above (bank suggested amount) they will need a pin. Oh and some banks only allow 5(or their limit) contactless payments without a pin. It's a pain but hey it's our money isn't it?

Not strictly true, most (if not all) contactless cards will request the PIN from time to time.

    This.

My friend in Tesco was only telling me this morning that a customer (with a full weekly shop in their trolley) had a request to enter their card & PIN yesterday and only had their phone.   Seemed he kicked off big time!!

Well so far, I'm struggling with this!  Every card I've tried to add to Google Pay isn't working.  Weird thing is, when I shop on line, Google uses and always has, my saved cards etc.   I must be doing something wrong and I will have to come back to this when I have more time.    Thanks everyone.

As discussed previously, not all cards are supported as Google Pay Contactless payment cards.
    List of supported banks:

As a temporary measure, to reduce the PIN issue with physical cards, are you paying contactless already?
If so the PIN should only be required every so often.

That is not normal for paying via Google Pay.
I have a number of cards that have never used the PIN, but work in Google Pay.

The requirement to enter the PIN every so often should only happen when using the actual card.

There may have been something else happening in the Tesco story you were told. Tesco has its own funky payment options!

As above, not all cards/banks support the different payment apps (Barclaycard has its own).

But you should be able to enable multiple apps if all cards are required, and switch between them as required. Does diminish the slickness of paying with mobile, but useful for the odd occasion!.

Also be aware that using mobile to pay uses the NFC 'radio' chip in your phone, so some cases can conflict, e.g if the case has card slots with contactless cards in it!
To pay with Google Pay you simply have to have the phone unlocked. How does it work if you have the Barclaycard app installed as well. Do you have to set one of the apps as the default?

    Thanks

Not sure about Barclaycard , but yes if you bank with Barclays. They are the bane of my life e.g. I set Barclays as the default  I pay my bar bill and walk 30 yards to the local shop but guess what  Barclays wants me to log in to their app hmmmmmm difficult because I can't get a signal in the shop most times. So I set google pay as default voila I can pay using another bank no problem. If I want to pay by Barclays I need to use my card. It's still my money at the end of the day and I am about to move all of my meagre pension account from them, sadly the wife doesn't agree for hers. Another pain from Barclays is if I use my desktop upstairs I can't do what I want on my Barclays account without confirming it's me via their app but my phone is downstairs on charge. Sorry I will rant for the rest of my days with Barclays, yes they say we are keeping you safe... that PC has never left my house and never will until it leaves this earth with smoke puthering from it, I only use it for banking on a well locked down linux system or for photo editing when I reboot it to Windows.
