- Nobody knows whether it will be possible to switch to a non-eco regular supplier next year when their fixed term ends, so we may end up being kept against our will to pay a hefty tariff. You're free to leave at any time, but only if another supplier wants you as a new customer. I don't know whether it's possible to somehow demand a standard supplier takes you, but I doubt it. I might end up having to switch to an expensive fixed tariff with a standard supplier, possibly with hefty exit fees, just to get away from them.
As long as the customer isn't owing money, I don't see a problem with changing to another supplier (eco or non-eco) at the end of the fixed price period myself.

when people saying maybe hard to switch suppliers in 1 year time if things are no better then many suppliers will still not take on new customers so you would be stuck on the non-capped variable tariff or switch to a whatever fix they have at that time?

As @QrizB wrote currently we are only aware of two suppliers accepting new users on SVT, Octopus and EDF, both require you to call them for a switch.
Octopus I have seen supports of users who are saying it is quite easy to join, while other found it hard (several tries with different agents) to impossible (giving up after several calls) to join.
EDF I have not seen any recent report about anybody joining them on SVT, the majority of people tried Octopus due to their Tracker and Agile tariffs. We are still telling people that EDF is still accepting new users on SVT, but I have not seen any proof.
So if we do not get back into suppliers accepting new customers on SVT you might end up in the situation you described, on a not cap regulated SVT or forced to take a new fixed tariff.
We all hope that the volatile energy market will calm down, but currently it seems to be getting worse and not better.

Surely the situation is likely to correct itself when suppliers are no longer forced to sell energy on the SVT at a loss. This is bound to happen - if it doesn't (in other words if prices keep rising and the cap never catches up) heaven help us all!0

It may help to read this page they do mention fixed DD so once setup if that what you want just contact themWhere does it say you can choose? All I see is an explanation of each. Their email does state that "all" new customers will pay variable, it seems pretty assertive about it. I'm guessing that they don't want to take the risk of unknown customers running up debt. Also they won't really know your usage upfront so can't work out how much to charge per month until they've seen what you use.Having been fleeced by Symbio taking £100s in bumped-up payments in their dying months I'm very glad to not be at the risk of them charging whatever random amount they choose according to a mystery algorithm. But I do understand that it may be an issue for some.

Personally I am preparing for the worst now with shares in Ripple energy wind farm, and I am looking at the Octopus Tesla Powerwall plan. 11p for electricity all day and an 11 p export tariff starts to look really good, even considering the initial cost.1 -
Looking at GE again if I join them it says variable direct debit, so does that mean the monthly price they quoted me could change at any point?0
