I am about to replace a 7 year old laptop which has an Intel core i5 processor.  I am noticing a large number of new laptops use Amd Ryzen processors.  I have done some research and I am unsure which is the best processor to go for.  The Intel one, as far as I can see, is still perhaps the best performer.

I am not very techie but I was recommended the Intel processor also when I bought a desktop a few years ago.

Advice will be appreciated.

Which Intel is better than which Ryzen?   Sometimes Intel is better and sometimes Amd is better, depends on the actual CPU and the
    testing process.

I could run some tests where a Ryzen CPU costs 20% less than then Intel one and wipes the floor with it.

Unless you have a specific requirement then a CPU is a CPU.

Comparing desktop and laptop processors is like comparing apples and oranges.

These days it really makes no difference.  Years ago it did, as AMD were playing catch-up to Intel on desktop and laptop, but that gap has closed significantly (particularly so on desktop).

The usage is more important.  If you're just going on the internet with it, it doesn't really matter, but if you're buying with the aim of blasting the bejesus out of anything that moves in a virtual world, you'd need something a bit more beefy.

Thanks.  The usage is mainly home office.  The current processors are i5.  Is there a preferred Ryzen one, equivalent to the i5?

You don't actually say why you feel the need to replace it?
Is it broken or does it just need some TLC/Updating?

I am replacing it because it is extremely sluggish, I can't get a proper Dell battery for it (the replacement one lasts less than an hour) and the quote I have had to totally strip it out and rebuild is almost as much as a new laptop.  My grandson spilling juice in it a couple of years ago doesn't help either.

i5 is not enough information, the number that comes next is more important as that gives the age and performance

    here is a summary

    https://www.intel.co.uk/content/www/uk/en/products/details/processors/core/i5/products.html

    7year old say ~2015  probably an i5-5xxxU  or i5-6xxxU

Which model laptop to have an idea of what you are replacing.
Does it have an SSD how much memory

    budget?

Does it need to be a laptop
What other systems do you have(I use phone and desktop most of the time laptops sit doing nothing)

if you are not going to top end and need latest chips  there are plenty of  good options in the nearly new
(dell outlet can be good, end of line getting sold off,  second hand though the better known suppliers are pretty safe bets.

Onboard graphics have come along way with both the Intel and AMD.
office use trends towards intel, games trends to AMD

For a non power user buying (nearly)new, processor even the lowest available will be good enough, you focus on the other aspects like quality/size of screen existing peripheral support.

Thanks for that reply.  Yes, I do want a laptop as it suits my business needs.  I have a phone, a tablet and a desktop.

I am replacing a Dell Inspiron 17 5000 5758 with an i5 5200U processor.  I can't recall the memory but it was high end which I probably do not require now.  I am looking currently at 8 gb ram, 512 gb ssd.

I am not impressed currently with Dell customer service and I do not want a refurbished machine.

Who's comparing desktop and laptop @Neil_Jones? OP states they have an i5 in their laptop and are seeing new laptops with Ryzen CPUs?

Neil_Jones, yes all I want to know really is whether Ryzen cpus are more or less on a par with what I have!  I don't have the knowledge to go much deeper into all the workings of them!
