Scottish Hamper

I'm going to a wedding in September in Norfolk and the couple have everything they need (been living together for a few years) so I've decided to make them a Scottish Hamper as a present. They have never visited so I'd like to give them a taste of Scotland. Any ideas what I can put in? Obviously it'll be travelling down with me and my rabble so anything that needs refridgerating is probably not a good idea.

So far I have tartan ribbons to decorate the box and a couple of white facecloths, shortbread, a couple of tins of Baxters soup (Scotch Broth and mullaga..I can't spell it but you know what I mean ;) ), oatcakes and some tablet.

Any ideas please?

Put in all the traditional stuff (shortbread, etc), but make sure and include some of the 'modern' stuff too - Glasgow and Edinburgh - vibrant cities, - Highlands - get away from it all holidays, - Skiing, etc, etc.

If you really want them to experience Scotland, what about vouchers for a stay here? A health spa like Stobo Castle, or a cabin near Loch Ness?

Tourist Board may be able to help?

    Hope this helps.
If it was easy, everyone would do it!

You can buy tinned Haggis ;)

Also spotted today in my local PO and gift shop a 2006 calendar of Scottish views. This shop also sells little Scottish cook books at £1.25 each, let me know if you want any, easy to post icon7.gif

What about square sausage? Macaroon bar and the round ginger cake in the greaseproof wrapper (cant remember the name).

If you decide to refrigerate that is?
  • Money is really tight for us so paying for a break for them is out of the question but I'm going to put a handmade invitation to visit us for a weekend (we're in Aberdeenshire), I know the haggis would go to waste, can't stand the tinned stuff myself, clootie is something I hadn't thought of and it'll give me an excuse to be in DH good books if I make a couple ;) I'm trying to avoid whisky as the groom has a history of alcohol problems. I found a doric book today so that'll go in, might help her understand DH but I'll still spend all the weekend translating for my norfolk relatives and my DH and children

Soor plooms (sweets), Edinburgh rock (yes we know it does!), pan sliced bread, some good Scottish cheese (Arran for example), porrige oats of course, Dundee cake (very traditional at New Year), a See You Jimmy hat is always good for a giggle and only costs a few quid. Lastly, why not call the Scottish Tourist Board and run it passed them, they may have some free giveaways they could send you!

A Selkirk Bannock - I gave one to a work colleague and it's taken him nigh-on a week to plough through it.

Not very Scottish - should be a plain loaf! (aka batch bread).

Surprised nobody mentioned Irn-Bru (I'd suggest a glass bottle rather than the plastic as they're too common) :D Some Pan Drops (mints for the non-Scots) would be conspicuous by their omission.

How about some black pudding too!
