Is Laundry Sanitiser Seasonal?

Options
Laundry sanitisers usually go in the softener compartment and so are usually added during the final cold water rinse cycle. Dettol say that their sanitiser is only effective at temperatures at or above 15°C. So, it seems that it is not usually effective during the winter. I was hoping that it would save me from washing underwear at 60°C as recommended by the NHS but it seems that would only be true in the summer.

I would assume that meant a wash temperature of over 15 degrees C. Not that I've ever come across laundry sanitiser.

I always wash them at 40 and I’m still alive. Is this for someone going into hospital?

    I've never heard of it.

What illnesses can you get from freshly washed clothes?

It's something Dettol make that can be used when washing to eliminate bacteria-related smells, my in-laws would add it to their laundry when MiL became incontinent.

I agree that it will be a 15deg wash, not 15deg water.

  • I don't know about any recommendations....

I can tell you though that for a long time now I have washed my sports kit on the shortest, coolest setting. Which I think is 15 mins and 30. I just chuck some of the dettol sanitiser stuff in the normal part of the drawer.
Because I am rank (sorry, efficient!) This is often run kit that has got wet, muddy etc then sits around for a few days while I collect some more of the same  :D

Smells nice and fresh and always looks clean enough.

UV exposure has the same effect, doesn’t it? Wash at low temp and hang outside to dry.

I fling in a bit of napisan into the powder drawer for sports gear, wash on 30 mostly. But too much or too long a soak in it can bleach or fade colours.

    Stops my machine whiffing too.

Surely it means the wash temperature should be 15 degrees or more, not the outdoor temperature.

The real question is:  is Laundry Sanitiser necessary?  And the answer is no.  If your clothes are clean AND dry, then there is no reason to buy a sanitiser.  It's just another marketing gimmick designed to make you part with your hard-earned-cash.

FYI, Napisan is a type of bleach.
