i have just applied for a new card and my credit limit has been reduced from £10000 to £2200. no good for me.
We are in a similar position £15k down to £1,350 and noone able to provide an explanation-“computer says no”.

In that case John Lewis - I’m out

John Lewis aren't lending you anything. If they were, none of this would be happening, but fundamentally they are not a bank.

My wife has the JL card, which will be closed.
Rather than go for the replacement NewDay JL card, she decided to go for the Barclaycard because that is VISA and she already has the M&S Mastercard.

Like others, my wife received a very low (£120) credit limit with the new card.
Does anyone have any insight into the behaviours that are likely to see Barclaycard increase the credit limit to something more useable?
Will Barclaycard see when the JL card is defunct and be amenable at that time to a review?
What sort of timescale will she have to work the card before the first review is possible?

Only Barclaycard can answer these questions, but I'd personally get the JLFS card closed now, use the Barclaycard lightly (~50-70% of credit limit, paid in full each month of course) then ask in the new year.

Other have reported this Barclaycard have given £200 limits asking for proof of income . After reviewing proof of income they have assigned permanent larger limits.
  • Barclaycard (I have the Platinum BT card) regularly bump my limit, it's gone up 100% over 7-8 years or so

My husband is the JL account holder and I have a secondary card and we  use  the card all the time.  He applied this morning following his invitation letter and the application was rejected despite a healthy income. When he telephoned for an explanation he was told that this was not possible but he  appeal against the decision'  I'm retired and with a pension 'income' of less than 20% of his income have applied myself elsewhere on this basis and had no trouble in getting a card in my own right with a healthy credit limit.  Even better one with 0% for 15 months.  I will put the money into albeit a low interest rate account each month and pay off before introductory rate.

That's pretty much what I suggested she does.

    What Barclaycard did she get?

    Barclaycard Rewards

So, like everyone else, I had a letter inviting me to apply to get the NewDay version of the credit card.  I was accepted but had about 8 different emails from JLP after the event.
Of great concern to me are two issues 1) once registered, we only have to put in our email and passnumber to access the online management portal.  One time check to my phone.   But my LastPass have flagged this up as not safe at all (in fact only 25% safe).   2) no way of communicating with the company on the portal,  no online chat available, only a phone number.   Communication seems to be a one-way process.

I phoned and was told that there will be no password repeatedly.   No explanations.    I asked about the communication and the phone was put down on me.

I'm FAR from impressed with either customer service or website  and the website itself is far from a slick presentation that I would expect from JLP.

I liked the vouchers to spend at John Lewis or Waitrose  but I feel that this shouldn't be at the expense of security.  I'd like to know what others think.   I'm seriously thinking of cancelling this card but will it affect my (so far excellent) rating on Experian (etc). ?

Almost certainly, but that doesn't matter. You would simply be closing an account, which isn't a concern on a well managed file. However, if you already have a thin file or poor history, having remaining accounts closed could be seen as a negative by lenders.

The previous JLFS platform was based on HSBC's full banking platform, which is more secure by design as there is far greater damage one can do with access to somebody's savings, investments, current accounts etc. A credit card portal is of far less use to a hacker or scammer because you need the actual card to do anything other than basic admin, and presumably NewDay will alert you if an address change or new card request was put in. Ultimately if NewDay's security measures fail then that's their problem, so long as it's not as a result of negligence on your part.
You can do much better than the Partnership Card in terms of rewards; even if you're extremely loyal to John Lewis and spend a lot in John Lewis/Waitrose. That should be your reason for telling them to do one, if you do.

Don't be too guided by arbitrary numbers offered by LastPass and Experian.
