John Lewis Partnership Card

  • Just adding my experience in case it's useful for others: current JL card limit is £3,000 but the credit limit given on the New Day one that I successfully applied for this morning is just £250! They asked for details of my income and my partner's but I think have only taken mine into account. That's no use to us so I think we'll be closing it and shopping around - and some good tips on this thread in that regard, thanks.

As mentioned before I am losing the Partnership card. I have an existing FD card. As I have not yet received the invitation to apply for the new Partnership card, I thought I would start using my FD credit card, just in case I don't get approved for the new card.
Now when I spend on the Partnership card, I get a text 75% of the time with the name of the retailer and the amount spent. Within 30 mins, the transaction is showing as Pending in the John Lewis app, usually.
I have the FD card but don't really use it, except for a few internet transactions every month. Definitely don't use it in retail settings. Until a few days ago, I had long forgotten my PIN. Anyways I had a PIN sent to me.
So I used the FD card in Tesco yesterday in a chip and pin transaction. This was between 1pm and 2pm.
No Pending transaction showing in the FD app before I went to bed.
No Pending transaction showing this morning in the FD app.
So I called FD and they told me it was a Pending transaction and something about waiting for Tesco to claim the money. I will admit I didn't understand that part of the conversation. Apparently the transaction will appear in the app later today or tomorrow.
The notification and the transaction appearing in the John Lewis app gave me a level of comfort.

Anyone who has the new Partnership card care to comment on transaction notification and timeliness of the notification? Also how soon does the transaction appear in the app?

    TIA

I'm surprised the FD card functions differently as it'll be running on HSBC's platform just as your JLFS card does. Can you log in to the settings on both apps and check the notification settings are the same? I suspect it might be an app setting.

Or did you have your JLFS card set up in Google/Apple Pay which sent you notifications? If so, just set up your FD card in the same way and you'll get notifications again.

What the agent said is true - typically using your card results in a pending transaction which either drops off or is confirmed later on - that doesn't stop you getting a notification for your pending transaction though.

I checked the settings in the FD app, and I could see nothing about changing notifications. Additionally I logged onto the website a few minutes ago and it too is not showing the transaction. Also as of a few minutes ago, transaction  not showing in the app. So I suspect this is an underlying system issue.

With my JLFS card yesterday I made a contactless payment and an applepay payment. Both transactions were texted to me withing minutes and were showing in the app say 45 mins later. And some of the orders I make through a food delivery service are also texted to me, but again, not all.

Has the FD card been added to your Apple Pay?

When you say texts, do you mean SMS text messages or do you mean app notifications? If the latter, which app is sending them?

I suspect it'll be Apple Pay.

No the FD card is not on Apple Pay. As I hadn't used it in a retail setting for many years (if ever), I did a Chip and Pin transaction so I might use it contactless in future. Also I didn't know Apple's requirements for adding a card to Apple Pay, so I wanted to use a chip and pin transaction first to minimise or eliminate the obstacles to adding the card to Apple Pay.
When I say text messages, I mean SMS text messages. For the Partnerhip card, I receive SMS text messages for most Chip and Pin transactions, contactless transactions, Apple Pay transactions and internet transactions. But no all, in each group I listed.

As an aside, the Tesco transaction is now showing on the FD app. It is showing as a complete transaction. Now I don't use the FD card often enough to remember if Pending transactions show. I do know pending transactions show for my FD current account, but not sure about the FD credit card. I am wondering if it is possible the FD app and website don't show pending credit card transactions.

I may have taken this thread off at a tangent. So I will say I liked the feature of the Partnership card of getting text messages for most transactions irrespective of payment method. I hope there is something similar in the Newday Parnership card.

This will be of no use whatsoever to you,  but I applied for my new card in the last couple of days.  I had a limit of £12k on the old card (increased probably 10 years ago when I wanted to make a large purchase and never increased since, but I rarely go above £1k of actual spend per month these days, never more than £3k, and the balance is always paid off in full).

Anyway I applied for the new card when my letter and code came, and was quite surprised (but pleased) that the new card will also have a limit of £12k.  Given I have never been anywhere near that limit for years I fully expected a much lower limit to be applied.

That's an unusal feature in that case; many banks will send app notifications nowadays but usually text message alerts are to do with account management - nearing your limit, statements being created, payments due etc.
  • JL card gave text notifications for all of my purchases (using physical card). It's a feature I really like though I know others will say it's pointless in terms of security etc.

I decided not to transfer to New day version of the card and have opened Barclaycard Avios. No purchase notifications, but app updates immediately with pending transactions. I also like that the same happens in Money Dashboard, whereas I can only see completed transactions for my Amex card.

I don't think there are many credit cards that give purchase notifications, certainly not reward/cashback cards anyway. Tandem was perfect for both, but we all know what happened to that!
  • One of the things that I really liked about the old PartnershipCard was that you could set it up to send purchase notifications.  A few moments after you pay for something whether in store or online you get a text. So if (God forbid) someone somehow hold of my credit card details and started spending online then I would be notified and could stop the card.  Neither of my two other credit cards offer this service. The new PartnershipCard says that it does though I haven’t tried it out for real yet. I applied for the new PartnershipCard a few days ago mainly because I shop a lot  in JL / Waitrose and like getting the vouchers. And on the new card you get triple points for the first three months. The process was very easy using the code they gave me with some details pre-filled. They gave me a credit limit of £8,250 which was more than double the limit on my old card.  Happy so far because it all looks very similar to what I had before and I’m not fond of too much change at my time of life!

You might find that adding the card to Apple or Google Pay (if you have either) will give you your purchase notifications again - not as text messages mind.
  • A bit off topic, sorry. But never used Google pay. Just wondering...do you get purchase notifications on the app is you pay using the physical card?
