If you go for Full Fibre which is fibre right into your house shown as FTTP in the table above then you'll get pretty close to whatever you are being offered right up to 900mbit's if you so wish.  For most people the limit is the wifi performance. I'm contracted to get 100mbit's and actually get around 98mbit/s with an ethernet cable but 93-94 mbit/s sitting around eight metres and two walls from the router. There's as peed guarantee of around 50mbit's

Anything else like fibre to the cabinet with copper pairs to your house tops out at around 76mbit's, but you are only likely to get around 35-45mbut's shown as VDSL in the table.

what are you actually getting now & what can your line actually support (check BT Wholesale site https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL) ?
I am on Plusnet's Unlimited Fibre but not Extra because the difference between what I get & what the line can support is negligible - most likely I would only gain <5Mb by going to Extra. I recently renewed & when the cs rep looked at the figures she didn't push for me to go Extra because she could see that there was no real gain for me.
Ive just done a speedtest: 34.7 download  4.1 upload

Im currently paying £54 per month with BT. (I dont remember exactly what package)

Heres a screenshot showing what my line supports (47.9?):

You're not going to get much more speed staying on a FTTC package, although you could probably get pretty much the same as you're on now for around £20 per month - look at the Super Fibre package - https://www.nowtv.com/broadband

You're line supports "up to" 47.9Mbps on a clean line so think around the 40 mark on average.

If you want higher speeds then you're going to have to look a full fibre package.

I think that you would get similar performance from Plusnet's Full Fibre @£22.99/month (with no included phone calls) although if you wanted to go for Extra @£24.99 to potentially get ~40 down it's only a little more/month. & as a new customer you should be able to get a £70 cash card for an 18 month contract (there will be an RPI+3.9% increase in March) which would pay for that.

Thanks all. Ill certainly look at getting either Plusnet's Full Fibre or Now's Super Fibre package. I think FTTP is much more than I need. (although lovely to have a 100Mbs+, but I cant justify spending the £20+pm more for it).

So that takes care of my internet query. My corollary question is: Because I wont be using my landline phone and more and  solely using my mobile, what do you think I should get?

In addition to the full fibre package that BT were quoting me, they also said they theyd offer a 2 year EE contract; 10Gb data per month for £10pm.

I really dont need 10Gb per month, perhaps I need less than half that. Ill post back here when I find out what my current package/usage is. But I think I just need something basic at ~£6pm with free calls/txts and ~2Gb per month.

    Thanks

I'm with Smarty (on the Three network) £6 month for unlimited calls, texts and 4Gb of data. EE doesn't work everso well where I live.

Thanks @matelodave . I should ask: Is there a website that shows which networks work best for my area?

Have a shufti here - https://www.4g.co.uk/coverage/ however in the end it's down to your actual location that determines how good a signal you can get. Just click on the links Bear in mind that there are only four actual network providers, EE, O2, Vodafone and Three, all the others just piggy back onto one or other of them

Coverage checkers are usually based on theory rather than measurement but will give you a good idea.  TBH the best idea is to get a couple of cheap paygo sims from different providers and try them out

BTW Smarty is a monthly product - you dont' have to sign up for a long period, just month on month.

Thanks @matelodave . Ill be using wifi calling when at home. So its really only when Im out-and-about that signal is important. Ill have a look now.

You also then need to make sure your chosen mobile provider supports wifi calling.  Some of the MVNOs, Plusnet for instance, do not.
