The details are pretty clear. All EVs registered since 2017 will be paying the same rate as cars - currently £165 per year. It's absolutely ludicrous because diesel cars registered before 2017 will only pay the current £20 rate. Par for the course with this particular government.

    Bit more detail here.

Edit: I can see this impacting on residual values of EVs that cost over £40k when we get nearer 2025. An extra £355 VED will make some buyers think twice when shopping for a car to save them money.

One of the reasons we have held off replacing my wife’s Picanto is that a new one would cost us £165 in VED compared to the £0 we currently pay.  That’s a big chunk of the petrol bill. £355 buys around 10,000 miles of EV charging at home.

In 2025 a 2017 car will be 8 years old.  I think this particular government would be criticised by many if it imposed a big tax increase on the owners of cars 8 years old and over. Whether or not the EV VED increase is right is a different question.

Pod Point braces for 2023 losses as EV deliveries fall

The growth of PIVs in the first half of 2022 of 26% has since slowed to 7% in the four months to 31 October 2022,” Pod Point noted, citing data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

This suggests EV sales are still growing but the rate of growth has slipped. No indication what periods the 26% and 7% relate to. Statistics, so treat with caution.

Given how the roll out of public charging points seems well behind the exponential rate at which EV sales have grown, this seems like a total non-story.

In fact, given the charge-point operators (collectively) have justified high prices beyond simply being resellers of electricity based upon their "significant capital investment" required, you might well expect that the businesses would lose money for several years as they invest to be the leading provider in the future (best locations).

Just a fun thought provoking article (in my opinion) suggesting that EV motors may just be bought in. I've often pondered the idea of car companies having a small number of 'standard' motors for their whole fleet, perhaps a low, medium and high power unit.* But this article goes one step further pondering the buying in of motors.

*Tesla got my imagination going when they originally suggested that the Semi would use 4 TM3 motors. This has since changed to three motors, and I don't know which of their motors they are going to use.

Nissan Picks JATCO & Hitachi Astemo For EV Drivetrains — Are Manufacturers Treating Drive Units Like Transmissions?

Nissan recently chose JATCO and Hitachi Astemo to provide something very important for future cars: the drivetrain. After I cover the basics, I want to place this in historical perspective and industry trends and then explain why it shows something new, too.

    The Nissan/Jatco/Hitachi Astemo Deal

The short version of this story: Hitachi Astemo, known for its electronics know-how, is going to build some inverters and motors. These will be sold to JATCO, which will assemble drive units for Nissan’s EVs and e-POWER (series hybrid) vehicles.

It's actually even easier than that.  Relatively easy to uprate a 'basic' electric motor to increase power output.

Does that mean you could have a standard size (or just a few), with different power levels - kinda making the space/hole universal?

Not a trick question, you may not know, but it does suggest some simplification going forwards.

Afraid I don't know either.  Previous response based on reading somewhere that the 'new improved' Leaf motor was actually the old one with a few 'tweaks' to increase power level.  Of course I may just have dreamt that ?

There are fixed magnet motors as used in the Leaf and induction motors as used in the Ariya for example.   According to Tesla Bjorn the Ariya is much more efficient if you ignore the fact the Ariya is yet another drivable brick (SUV).  When will the SUV madness come round an end? We need pointy cars.

That's my motor knowledge exhausted BTW.  :)
