I paid for something last night using PayPal and before you confirm the amount there are a series of tick boxes asking if you would like to make a donation to charity. From memory (and I was convinced I would remember it , but now of course I’m a bit hazy) the pre ticked box was to round my payment up, so my £7.59 was rounded up to £8, or to opt for a larger donation, add your own amount or tick ‘no thank you’. I ticked no thank you and paid the £7.59 .

I don’t recall seeing this before , but it was fairly obvious if not a bit odd to see something already pre ticked, but I do tend to pay attention when spending money so did make my own selection before confirming the amount to pay . I’ve a couple of items I’m bidding on that finish tomorrow, if I win either I’ll try and remember to make a note of the various options .

I can't believe that was pre ticked for you. How is that legal? Maybe a similar thing happened to me? Except in the eBay app on my phone, the pay screen only shows the product and the pay button,  you'd have to scroll down to see any boxes.

I thought "pre-ticking" optional extra costs was no longer allowed?  Was the vendor a UK or EU site?

I was going to try again with my next payment to make sure my memory was clear, but unfortunately I didn’t win the lot I was going for. I’m bound to buy something shortly on eBay though and will make sure I double check which boxes are or are not ticked.

I don’t know about the OP but I was using PayPal on eBay UK.

OK, I just bought something and this time I made sure to remember what the screen looked like. It didn’t give me all the options about rounding up this time, just a list of my sources for paying , ie ‘PayPal balance’ ‘credit card’ etc, and then a thick line and new heading then an optional tick box for a £1 donation , today it was for an LGBT charity. I can confirm the charity box was not pre ticked and was separated from my options to choose my funding source, but on the same page.

it is possible I suppose if not paying attention to just tick it thinking it was confirmation from payment or something  , but it is very clear that it is an optional donation- the charity is stated and there is a link to find out more about the charity if wished.

or in my case, it's possible for the page to glitch and cause a user pressing the pay button to somehow tick a box they could not see.
I can't check mine now, I closed my paypal account. I'm 100% certain though that I did not fill any checkbox. Thanks for checking it.

Well I’ve seen 2 different versions of the screen now (I bought something else) and neither has the pay button close to the tick boxes , the pay button was below the summary showing the price to be paid.

    It's a mystery, right?
I am also at a loss. how can this have happened?
I feel like i need to reiterate, I did not click a checkbox.
So there must have been a pretty bad problem. as I said previously, I had to press the pay button three times before it worked.

There’s always a possibility they are trialling a lot of different versions to see what works as it’s only recently I’ve started seeing the option for donations. Mind you I am very money cautious so do take great care with tick boxes and options.

As can be seen on here very many people are not and it usually them that make the mistake.
