Do you use all the hot water or simply heat it out of habit?

We cut our water heating down over a few weeks. knocked 10 mins off the timer every 3 days. Also changed the thermostat to 55C which is plenty hot enough for our use. We now heat for 40 minutes and this gives us 2 showers, hubby's shave and a bit left. You know when you've gone too far, shower runs cold lol

  • Hi,
you would be better with immersion timed to catch the last hour of night rate just before you get up in the morning, with a well insulated tank should last until evening.

The wee box in my kitchen is def to control the hot water. It’s nothing to do with Scottish power. My landlord showed me that I should “boost” it when I need to take a bath.

I don’t even think our shower comes out that hot water?! We have to turn on a switch to get the shower running and it doesn’t make the hot water tank make noises(?) our hot water out our taps is *boiling* hot and our shower isn’t like that.

Today at 9am the meter showed £2.74 and 6.95kwh since midnight. Now at 7pm it shows £2.91 and 10.2kwh. That’s ten hours and it’s used 3 and a bit kWh and only 20p?  I did a wash and had a shower today. So how does it use £2 from 3am-9am when no ones doing anything?!

I’ll try just turning the box off in the kitchen tonight. Like I said idk if the shower even comes from there, I don’t know how hot water works. We will see what it says in the morning. I’m so curious why this is happening.

The daily "standing charges" for my gas and electric are added in the early hours of the morning and therefore show on my IHD. So even if I switched everything completely off overnight I would still see a charge of little over 70p in the morning.

I wonder if your rates are set up back to front - and possibly what is showing on the IHD at the moment might be at old rates too. The rates back to front thing isn’t uncommon - we had a big issue with a Scottish Power some years ago when they insisted that no, Rate 1 was day and rate 2 was night, because that was the way they assumed it was - but ours are the opposite way round. I had to send them date-stamped photos of the meter to get them to agree to switch things about and recalculate.

Yeah the thing in my kitchen is one of these guys

As far as I know this is the hot water control. I am just going to set it to “off” the whole night. Fingers crossed it’s just that and we can try the whole “decrease the hot water time/ day to day frequency” thing. If not I’ll ask them about the rates being back to front/check my house for ghosts running all my appliances silently at 4am.

That looks like a stock photo to me, not the OPs device.  I doubt they went to the trouble of editing out the background.
