Depending on the size of your immersion tank, how much hot water you use through the day and how well insulated the tank is,  6kW is not an unreasonable amount of electricity to consume to bring it back to temperature.

Are you sure the hot water timer is set to the correct clock and on-off times? I suspect it is switching on after 3am.

Is the meter switching a separate circuit for Economy 7 use including the immersion heater timer?
Or does your immersion heater just rely on a permanently wired feed to the timer and the timer alone determines when to switch on the immersion heater element?

It is important to keep the immersion timer set to the correct time and to check if the immersion heater automatically adjusts for British Summer Time. If it does auto adjust for BST, then this could be a problem as your Economy 7 time window is possibly fixed on GMT. It is in our electricity region. If it does automatically switch to BST, then depending on the immersion heater on time, you can end up running the heater for an hour at peak rate due to the time shift  :(

Also, once the tank has reached the set temperature, the heater will switch off anyway until the water cools down. So reducing the time it is on from 3 hours to 2 hours shouldn't make a big difference in running costs.

I am in a rented flat but all this stuff is brand new. The heating time is set using a wee box in the kitchen. It's accurately showing the time now, and had been set for summertime 12-3:15. I have changed it to be 1-3 to see if that reduces it some tonight. All the radiators are stone cold.

Unfortunately the OP's IHD doesn't have a graph to show historic usage.  I know this, because I have exactly the same IHD with EDF.
The only way I can view historic usage on a graph, is by using EDF's website.

    SMETS2 chameleon.

Someone from Scottish Power forums says the wee display can be delayed. I find this strange, as it does go orange immediately when I put on the kettle. And i did check and it's set up to send meter readings every half an hour but there's no data on my account. So what's its purpose? :S
  • Hi,
if only installed on Monday, maybe not communicating with supplier yet.

I think you are wrong here   the wee box you are describing is the In House Display and that doesn't set times - it shows the detail of the usage in the form of KWh and £.

The heating will be controlled by the Smart meter itself  -  which is probably in an outdoor meter box or a communal cupboard. Has that meter got 4 or 5 cables ?   If 4 there is a time switch / controller somewhere.

    PS Electric Shower ?

    Try downloading the Bright app.

It should pick up the smart meter data whoever your supplier is. It won't show live data but will show use on previous days which can be broken down into 30 minute time slots.

  • Just switch off the immersion heater completely just for one night.  See if the consumption stays or disappears.  Then think further!
