I cancelled a holiday after reading the terms and conditions which said I would lose my deposit.  After the descision came through from the travel agent I ended up getting £663 from my original payment of £5401. I complained to ABTA and they say the descision is correct , I really don't understand how this can be correct ? Any advice on how I take it further would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

                Thanks in advance

We need a lot more information before anyone can help you. Who is the booking with, how long before you travel and what have you booked, a package holiday or a flight on its own?0

Thanks for the reply , I will get all the information and get back to you thank you0

How long before the planned departure did you cancel? ( There is often a tiered level of refund depending on how long before departure that you cancel .
A travel agent may additionally charge admin fees for cancellation if this was in the T&Cs of your booking .0

Thanks in advanceThat's standard in the travel industry. If you have a disinclination to travel you will lose part, or all, of your payment - as said above.TUI, for example, have a sliding scale of losses linked to the notice of cancellation given.Period Before Departure When Notice Of Cancellation Is Received/ Percentage Of Total Booking Price70 days or more (Loss of deposit) 69 - 57 days = 30% 56 - 43 days = 50% 42 - 29 days = 70% 28 - 15 days = 90% 14 - 0 days = 100% Your deposit is non-refundable, even if the cancellation charge calculated is lower than the deposit amount paid. Where extra facilities or transport options, see Sections 10 and 11.4, are non-refundable, in part or in full, the cost of these will be added to the cancellation charge you have to pay..

We still have no idea what was booked in the first place, perhaps if apexsecy responds we might be able to offer relevant advice0

Complete speculation, but wonder if it was an OTA "Package Arranger" rather than a proper tour operator, and that flights had been booked and payed for upfront hence only a very small refund?0

Are any of them ABTA members? I certainly recall at least one of the better known names choosing to leave rather than being prepared to honour the refund expectations set by the association in the midst of the pandemic....bagand96 said:Complete speculation, but wonder if it was an OTA "Package Arranger" rather than a proper tour operator, and that flights had been booked and payed for upfront hence only a very small refund?0

You're right that plenty did leave ABTA over the spat about Covid refunds. But there are still some that remain ABTA members, a couple of the bigger names I just checked are.eskbanker said:

It wouldn't even have to be one of the bargain basement OTAs with terrible reputation, it could even be an independent agent or a bigger agent with good reviews and service. But if a holiday is booked and part of that included non-refundable flights paid upfront, then any refund after cancellation would likely exclude the flight costs. But it will all depend on what was booked and who with.1
