I’m on a Smart Meter. I was away for 5 days in May so no cooking or heating then. Have the heating off as much as possible. I’ve unplugged everything I can. My flat has three rooms plus a bathroom and kitchen. The thermostat is set at 19 degrees for a couple of hours in the morning. I work from home in a fleece with a blanket on my lap. I’m saving for winter bills but I’m so afraid I won’t be able to afford them.

How much energy does your bill say you used during May? How many kWh of gas, and how many of electricity?

Oh so it's the direct debit payment not the cost of the bill?

No. I pay my bill in full every month. In March 2022 it was £150

I’m relieved. This is my bill. Proper chuffed I’ve reduced my consumption so much.

So where is now the £138 you said you have been billed. Do you maybe mean that your direct debit is £138?
  • If you are in Whole Amount DD Monthly, then you will only pay the actual bill.

There is always a "standby DD" amount that shows in your online account based on your overall annual usage.

That will only be taken in the unlikely event that EDF are unable to interrogate your meter for actual readings.

I have been on this method for years and they have never resorted to taking that amount, times between bills have varied between 28 and 36 days but they have only ever taken the actual bill amount.
