This is MSE. Paying by cash is more expensive. I want the cheapest possible, so I don't mind who knows that I'm buying some milk in Sainsbury’s if I get it a few pence cheaper 

MSE is moneysaving - it is not about buying the cheapest.
Moneysaving means not wasting it - wasting money is, very, often buying the cheapest.

Moneysaving is all about buying the buying what you want in the cheapest way.

So you use the cheapst method of payment and any offers etc to get the cheapest price for what you want to buy that's what the post you quoted is on about.

I'd welcome a cashless society, I don't think I've used an ATM in over 3 years.

Not all VPN's are equal either, plus you put your trust in them, a lot of companies have said they didn't save logs but turned out they were.
