The only downside is that AFAIK it doesn't download apps from the Google Playstore but so far it doesn't seem to have bothered my wife, she manages to download what ever she needs without any effort.

I dont use it so I don't know how restrictive that might be, others, with more experience might have a different opinion but I guess that it's no more restrictive than the difference between Apple or Android apps

    Simple work around.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Re "Kindle Fire" tablets, Amazon haven't used this name for their tablets since 2014 but it has lingered. That TopCasback link will be fine I'd have thought.

The Amazon Appstore (the default location for apps that is baked-in to Fire tablets) has some of the popular stuff (iPlayer, Instagram) but you will need to "jailbreak" the tablet to install apps from the Google Playstore (eg Chrome browser). It's easily done and there are numerous sites giving instructions. ETA as @GDB2222 has linked above.

You can install apps from the Amazon store and also side load apps from other stores. It also has extendable memory you can add a small memory card.

... I know nothing about Amazon tablets, are there any gotchas?
When my mother had one, the volume was painfully low even at full volume. We had to install a volume booster app to allow her to watch BBC videos and the like.

I got a nice Lenovo one from Lidl - £75.  Obviously you'd have to check what they have and when.  And jump on it immediately as these items can sell fast.  I went to the shop the first morning they were selling them and was there when the doors opened - none were on display and one of the Lidl staff were handing out cards to take to the till to make the purchase as they knew they would go quick.

But you only need to do this once.

I'm deaf  enough to need two hearing aids and can still hear my wife's Fire HD10 from across the room and she certainly doesn't have the volume wound up.

Are you praising the sound volume of the device or complaining about your wife's listening habits? :D

Just got one of these  Fire HD10's for my BiL from Amazon. Refurbed (it looks brand new to me) and only £73. Fantastic value and a really decent tablet for general use. Plenty of easy to follow youtube vids on installing the google play store on it also. Can't go wrong, and decent 'smart' covers on ebay for around £8.
