Having not heard a peep from the PO over this matter I decided to try my luck at another branch, Hoddesdon (a relatively small and library based branch). They knew nothing of any withdrawal of the Driving Licence Renewal Service and promptly dealt with my application!

Needless to say I'll be taking up this matter with the Post Office. I'm shocked how the Harlow branch could make the statements that they did when it's clearly not true!

    Regards
    Richard
So was this small, library based branch equipped to take your digital photograph?

(I thought it was because small PO branches didn't have the necessary equipment that you could only do it at larger branches.  Certainly when I had my licence renewed in the PO none of my local ones could do it - I had to travel to the main branch in the city centre).
Our local one witch is mall & part of a newsagents does them. So maybe it's more if they want to, than anything else.

  • Hi All

Just one final note on this.

Unexpectedly the PO have just emailed me about this. They've offered me compensation but refused any further discussion (not that there was ANY discussion). No apology nor any explanation was given on the matter at all.

I'll shortly get £3, yes £3, for my troubles.

    Astonishing!!!

My local post office (a big one) hasn't been doing driving license renewals for a long time with a note up inside saying it was 'temporarily unavailable' but went into today and they're doing them again.  They said it's been unavailable for some time because they've been changing system and now use a tablet based system including the photo so I've finally been able to get mine done.

I’m glad I got mine done last year, gives them 9 years to sort it out.
    Might just be enough time/

I got a D1 form from my local post office a few days ago, they were busy.
Do you mean that they no fill the form in for you, like they do with passports?

Well if you have a valid passport you can make the application online, much easier and quicker. If you don't have a valid passport then the (some) Post Office(s) can process it and take the photo, the second best method (although there is a small charge for it). Doing a D1 yourself will take the longest by far but will still get you your licence.

There is no form if you do it through the post office instead they just go through an app on a tablet, take a photo, you give them a signature then they upload it and that's it done.  It's meant to be much quicker on the DVLA side as well which is why I went for it, my passport is nearly expired so I can't renew online.

Edit - New license arrived in a week
