I’ve read about this a lot in the last 6 months, the first issue was the machines were out of order at all post offices.
Not heard much after that except people can’t get them renewed.
I did mine at the post office one year ago and took 4 working day to come back.
The post office checked does not work, I looked up my local and it gives all post offices in my vicinity.
But I know that only 2 did it.

When I just checked all the main Post Offices near here online using the branch finder at www.postoffice.co.uk/branch-finder , although DVLA photocard renewal is in the list of services, it doesn't have a little green box next to it.

I've no idea what that means as they can't be bothered with trifles like a key, but I'm thinking it may be something to do with whether the service is actually available or not.

Well there's another PO page (linked from .Gov I think) that lists all PO's that provide the service, from which you just have to find your nearest branch. No ticks needed :)

Yes, but if you then check a branch that is supposed to provide the service at www.postoffice.co.uk/branch-finder you find a list of services, all of which have little green check marks except DVLA photocard renewal (and SIA licence).

The way to find out is to go there and ask I suppose, but then what is the point of t'interweb?
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

I've just looked at the branch where I renewed my photocard last year, and it's not clear if they still do it or not.

The website gives a PO contact 'phone number under driving licence renewal 0345 722 3355

I had mine renewed at a Post Office in early January this year. I noted I was fortunate that my local one did it, even though two others near me did not.

Even so when I tired the first time I was told 'we can't do it on a Wednesday, come back tomorrow'

Once they sent it off my new licence came back in a few days

We renewed ours at the PO early April, so if it's changed it's only very recently.
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)
  • Having not heard a peep from the PO over this matter I decided to try my luck at another branch, Hoddesdon (a relatively small and library based branch). They knew nothing of any withdrawal of the Driving Licence Renewal Service and promptly dealt with my application!

Needless to say I'll be taking up this matter with the Post Office. I'm shocked how the Harlow branch could make the statements that they did when it's clearly not true!

    Regards
    Richard

So was this small, library based branch equipped to take your digital photograph?

(I thought it was because small PO branches didn't have the necessary equipment that you could only do it at larger branches.  Certainly when I had my licence renewed in the PO none of my local ones could do it - I had to travel to the main branch in the city centre).

    Yup. Go figure!

The 'equipment' was a pull-down blind (background) and a tablet for the photo and 'paperwork'. Not complex and not difficult but somewhat time consuming for the very friendly counter assistant.

I did wonder when getting ours done that it seems entirely possible to roll out this service to smaller POs.

They just need the tablet, the software, a background screen and competent staff.

Not necessarily tiny village ones, but smaller towns where they have more than one member of staff.
