Post Office no longer doing Driving Licence Renewals?

Hi All

I've just been to our local (main) post office to renew my photocard driving licence. However, I was turned away by the staff there stating that they (the PO) didn't have the contract anymore, despite the renewal form, the PO website and DVLA saying otherwise! Has anybody else come across this? It's bizarre really as I can find nothing online to confirm this alleged fact!

Thanks
Richard

Have you checked that your actual local branch is listed as offering that service? Its possible it was just removed from the branch. Drivers Licence Renewal | Identity | Post Office®

Otherwise try contacting Post Office and ask.

Possibly that this particular PO no longer has a contract to handle licence renewals, not necessarily the same across the board.
  • No, this office (Harlow) is on the list and indeed has a poster/writing on the wall that states that it renews driving licences there. I too assumed that it was just that office so I asked if I went elsewhere would they do it and they clearly stated 'No, the PO has lost the contract'.
    Very odd indeed!

The last DLVLA contract was for 7 years from 1 April 2013 to 31 March 2020 with an option to extend up to 3 years so it may well be in the process of renewal or up for renewal from next year but I've not heard anything about them losing the contract altogether.
  • I've 'complained' to the PO and asked for confirmation. I'll post their response when it arrives.

Maybe they are waiting for the new system to be installed.

When I just checked all the main Post Offices near here online using the branch finder at www.postoffice.co.uk/branch-finder , although DVLA photocard renewal is in the list of services, it doesn't have a little green box next to it.

I've no idea what that means as they can't be bothered with trifles like a key, but I'm thinking it may be something to do with whether the service is actually available or not.

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

Yeah I read that but wasn't sure if it was and old report as there was no year mentioned.

Well there's another PO page (linked from .Gov I think) that lists all PO's that provide the service, from which you just have to find your nearest branch. No ticks needed :)

That article is from at least 2009. It references Lord Mandelson who was business secretary in Gordon Brown's Labour government.
