And about 5 minutes after posting my previous the phone rang from a lovely young woman calling regarding TPS - telephone preference system or whatever. Asking if I was getting many scam calls ("why yes I am!!") and could I confirm my post code. She wasn't very happy about me asking why she needed my post code for a phone number. Supposedly she already had it but couldn't tell me what it was. Eventually she hang up. Next time I'll give her a random local post code and see what she does with that. Probably say it is correct and askfor my CC details so she can upgrade me to the premium service

So this is a scam call from a scammer offering to sort out your problems with scam calls?
They've gone Meta!

I had two this morning - one from a Nancy from my "Internet Service Provider" and another from an Alex from "Virgin", who started with the greeting "Good afternoon madam". The second time he called me madam he hung up after I questioned his reasoning! I hung up on Nancy as I just couldn't be bothered to string her along. I have, for my personal amusement, strung them along (20 minutes was my best effort) while switching on my computer and commenting that it is taking a long time - must be that virus they said I've got. Sometimes I sinply get bored and suggest they go forth and multiply, as I just can't be bothered.

Yes, scam. And it's the same one they tried on me too, years ago. I can't believe they are still trying the same scam. I don't even answer my phone now if I'm in, anyone who wants me can leave a message. I have caller display too as it was offered free as part of my package but I don't really need it.
When I did answer that call though, a foreign sounding man said he was calling from BT and wanted to check my internet speed. I'm with BT but I didn't believe him since I know BT don't do that. I asked him why he wanted to check it when it's on every online bill I receive.
He kept saying that it was very important that the speed was correct and I must turn on my computer. I said 'I won't be turning my computer on until I am ready to turn it on and I think you are a scammer'.
He even had the nerve to ask me why I thought that! And when I asked him if I was wrong, he sounded very angry, shouted '**** off then you stupid ***!' and hung up very abruptly. I don't think I was the stupid *** at all.

Unfortunately, a small number of people do fall for it. A lot try to get you to run a TeamViewer session with them, where they then do untold damage. Talktalk used to (and possibly still do) block TeamViewer sessions by default, which frustrates people trying to give genuine help!

Another good one, is to ask them to stay on the line a bit longer so your tracker can identify their premises for the police to investigate - usally gets rid of them pretty quickly.0 -
I had a call a few years ago after I bought a new freezer, it was from a genuine call centre, the person said what would I do if the thing broke one day after the warranty ran out! So I replied use the consumer act that says that all goods must be fit for purpose for up to 6 years after purchase, or I said something along those lines. They ewere gobsmacked that I had said that and ended the call.Someone please tell me what money is0
