Phone call from BT about internet speed

This morning, I had a phone call from someone saying they are from British Telecom. He said, I am not getting the internet speed I should be getting and they can help me with it. I said, I am not with BT and this could be a scam call. He said, how can you say that, we are trying to help you. I said I'm not interested and I put the phone down.
Just wondering what your thoughts are or if anyone else has had this call.

I don't even entertain them on the phone. As soon as anyone says they are from BT/Amazon/EE/TalkTalk/Carphone Warehouse etc. I just put the phone down.If they had any offer for me I'd expect them to email me, and if they do I can closely check it to see if it is legit.I see it the same as someone coming to my door selling things or stopping me in the street trying to sell me things - I would never buy anything from anyone in those situations.0

Just hang up on them.0 -
He probably would have wanted to install software on your PC to "help" diagnose the slow speed - and help himself to the contents of your bank account !!!0

Sometimes if I have the time I string them along. Ask which pc has the problem, which do they want me to use to connect with them, specify "do you mean the Lenovo tablet or the Mac?" Ask "what do you mean click on X?, I can't see that. Where would I find it?"
I've had the same people call me repeatedly. Sometimes they are with BT. Sometimes with the TPS! And once it was for the warranty for my new fridge. One chap usually ends up swearing at me for wasting his time.

If you want to educate yourself on how these scammers work go on youtube and type Jim Browning. He hacks into these call centres and exposes them, he has also been on Panorama on the BBC.0 -
Calling it "British Telecom" is always a giveaway, they are too stupid to get the name right1

I like the ones who want to discuss the accident that I've just had. By the time I've asked them which one and given them a few options of dates, times and places I can keep them going for quite a while.
A couple of times I've even had the supervisor on to see how he could help after I've got the original caller wound up, but they are usually savvy enough to know that I'm stringing them along. and can sometimes get quite abusive.
Another good one, is to ask them to stay on the line a bit longer so your tracker can identify their premises for the police to investigate - usally gets rid of them pretty quickly.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0
