Customers are forced to pay the fee to avoid paying the unrealistic alternate full price.
Here's a novel idea for you to consider.

Instead of people being "forced" to pay the membership fee or paying an unrealistic price, why don't potential customers simply shop elsewhere?

Despite what you keep posting, low price, high price or anywhere in between, no-one is being forced to buy the goods or to pay for membership.

Plenty of customers do shop elsewhere. Obviousy everyone is welcome to chose to shop elsewhere but to shop there and pay the marked ticket price rather than the RRP or inflated price you have to pay for membership.
As I said, its bizarre how defensive customers are of this. Do you think all shops should do this?
I find it bizzare how offended you are by Go Outdoors business model.

Some other shops do have similar ways of restricting sales, Costco of course is members only andTesco only give special offers now to Clubcard holders. 20 years ago Matalan required membership too (but was only £1).
Richer Sounds have special offers for VIP members. It's free to sign up though. The Go Outdoors card is only £5 and it lasts a year.

Richer Sounds VIP club exists to get email addresses to promote to customers, as you say its free.
The go outdoors card is only £5 which can double the price of a cheap item or be an irrelevance if you spend much more. If the £5 membership fee is to be regarded as almost nothing why do they need to charge it? Its not charged for the customers benefit. Ikea has similar membership, Ikea family? They don't charge. It benefits them by email promotions and encouraging visits.

Obviously it's not for people buying one cheap item.  It's for people who spend a lot, and to encourage people to spend a lot.

They have done the research, it's been going for years, clearly they think this benefits them. It's optional for people to take up or not take up.  Really, what's your problem?  IKEA do something different.  So what?

People are happy to pay the £5. If nobody was buying the card then they might change it but it's been working for several years. To shop at Brandalley, Secret sales, sportpersuit you have to be a member. That's how they're able to offer lower prices.
    Come on you Irons

I'm not offended by it, I think its unnecessary. It is nothing more than a marketing tool. Other such as Tesco have similar but the reductions are equally spurious and they don't expect you to pay for them.

But if it works for Go Outdoors it is not unnecessary. They obviously think it is a necessary part of their business.
Its unnecessary for me as a customer, I'm indifferent about their business.

Oddly enough, I doubt they tailor their business to you exclusively.  Jaguar make Jaguar cars, which are unnecessary for me, as I don't want one.  Lots of companies offer lots of services I don't want.  I don't spend my time ranting about how awful their business is that they haven't provided a service in a form that appeals to me.  Do you, or is it only Go Outdoors you have a down on for offering something you don't want to people who do want it?

I doubt you'd have time, you're to busy telling people on here they're wrong about everything.

Ah, you've decided not to actually address the point but start making personal attacks. That's a sure sign of the strength of your argument.

Feel free to be as insulting as you like, just admit you were talking nonsense as well.
