@QrizB I'm an electrician so I'd have no problem in fitting a time switch and contactor for switching purposes. We use between 10,000 and 12,000 kWhs a year, haven't looked at exact usage per day. Insulation is not great, loft is up to current spec but as it's a cottage the loft is small and we have what are classed as 'rooms in roof' where part of the ceiling is the roof. These parts have poor 1980s insulation in them. Walls are mainly solid clay lump so not great either. If it wasn't a rental property I'd already have improved both walls and ceilings upstairs. Might have to look in to rooms in roof insulation again. Had thought about insulating wallpaper as we have some particular cold spots that condensate in winter and cause mould. Think the rats have been up there and gone through the felt and removed insulation from that particular section!
    Hi @Boggins

If you use between 10,000-12,000 kWh a year then that isn't £25 a day.

If you use 80% at night as you have stated let's take the 12000 kWh figure that's 9600 night rate and 2400 day rate.

    9600 kWh night rate @19p = £1824
    2400 kWh day rate guessing 35p =£840

    Say £90 for standing charge

    Total £2754

    £229.50 a month £7.55 a day on average

I would be interested if the energy companies actually state what they class as an EV anywhere.  I have an electric bike for instance, thats an electric vehicle in a sense?  I wouldn't class it as fraud if they don't actually state anywhere what an EV is, and I answered yes to the question in order to get on the tariff!  Or, failing that I might try and pick up a cheap electric scooter/moped etc.

Not a lot of wiggle room with Octopus...

'Car' seems to be clear enough in large bold font...

    Not sure about others though.

Seems obviously disingenuous to me using a service outwith the agreed conditions of use,to each their own though, maybe needs must.

They probably didn't bother checking previously mostly, but now given that "opportunists" with no EV,neither interest nor intention of getting one are taking the proverbial the majority will insist on a copy of a V5,or equivalent instead of just taking your word for it.

Do electric bikes, scooters, mopeds etc have a registration requirement?.

    Motorbikes and mopeds will.

Other than a Harley (director of the company renting part of our warehouse has one of the electric ones, they're nice) I have no idea what is available though on this front.

Sub-£5k Nissan Leafs are now available again on Autotrader though.

It is also very easy to spot the absence of an EV and the use for storage heating due to the consumption pattern over the year...
Not very convincing to only seem to need to charge your EV in the winter months, and still have steady daytime use so obviously no solar...
Like most of these ideas, if it is only a few people here and there doing it, it isn't worth their time to go hunting, if it becomes 'popular' then they will have to go and look to preserve the integrity of the data they are collecting...

Does anyone ever actually check?  Presumably they're not offering these tariffs at a loss, if they're happy to supply power at a low price while it costs them very little then why should they care what you use it for?
I'm guessing that they're worried that people might sign up without knowing what they're doing then claim they've been "mis-sold".  But if you've read that it's intended for an EV, understand why this is and are happy with it for your own purposes then where's the harm in pretending you've got one and signing up?
IF they'd said it was great for storage heaters then everyone would be all over this forum saying it cuts off too early and/or their consumer unit needs re-wiring etc etc, big PR disaster.  So they don't.  But it sounds like the OP knows exactly what he's doing, why, and what the limitations are.
I'd say if you're happy with it then tick whatever box and get it, nobody will be harmed and all will be fine.  If they ask tell them you're going to get one - almost everyone can honestly say this, as we'll probably all have one eventually anyway, perhaps in a decade.

The harm is that the aim of the tariffs for Octopus at least is to build a group of qualified customers and collect data about use patterns, then to use that data with their partners to develop new products and tariffs to further refine and target the offering, so it is unhelpful to have people who are not part of the target cohort in the dataset.
As you can see from the detail I posted above, just having an intent does not cut it, they reserve the right to ask for an order number to support your claim if they want to...
I really do understand the desire to get access to cheaper overnight electricity, but lets not try to pretend that it is anything other than a lie to claim you have an electric car when you do not, and a lie to obtain a financial advantage is fraud...

A bicycle is legally classified as a vehicle, (cf cars, trikes and motorbikes which are motor vehicles).

So doesn't that make a bicycle with electric motor assist a battery electric vehicle?

See the screenshot @MWT posted above. They clearly state "CAR" as requirement plus they are asking for for a home charger, so they will not even accept charging from a normal plug.
